Hajj exhibition to be staged at the British Museum next year
Date Posted: 21/07/11
The British Museum is to host an exhibition on the Hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca which Muslims undertake.
Running from Thursday January 26th to Sunday April 15th, those booking London hotels will be able to find out more on the annual ritual which sees thousands gather in Saudi Arabia.
Neil MacGregor, director of the museum, told the BBC that the Hajj is something which "needs to be better understood" by more people as it is a "supreme spiritual moment for Muslims".
The exhibition, titled Hajj: Journey to the Heart of Islam, will use manuscripts, diaries, art and photographs to explain the ritual.
Work by artists Ahmed Mater and Shadia Alem will be featured while the history and destination of Mecca will also be explored.
"Very beautiful things, supreme works of art, have been made to be sent to Mecca to accompany people. We'll be looking at some of those objects and they are supreme," Mr MacGregor told the source.
The Hajj takes place each year during Dhul Hijjah, which is the 12th month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
