The Great North Run returns to Newcastle this September

The world's second biggest half marathon, the Great North Run is returning to Newcastle and South Shields this September
Book Newcastle hotels for Saturday, September 15th and Sunday, September 16th to join the spectators on the 13.1 mile course and cheer the runners on.
For those that fancy getting involved, they can still register for the chance to participate in the 5km and maybe even appear on the live BBC coverage in the process.
Some £28 million is raised for charity every year at the Great North Run, with racers having the opportunity to race for particular organisations, such as Diabetes UK, the Bobby Moore Fund and the British Heart Foundation, if they agree to raise money for them.
The Great North Run has been going since 1981, when Olympic 10,000m bronze medallist and commentator Brendan Foster came up with the idea. Around 12,000 ran at the first half marathon, 30 years later in 2011 this figure had grown to 54,000.
An array of big name celebrities have opened the race in the last few years, including Tony Blair, Sting, Ant & Dec and Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah.
