Expert: 2010 another 'great year' for London theatre
Date Posted: 27/01/11
The popularity of London theatre breaks is still strong despite the hard economic times, according to new figures.
Research from the Society of London Theatre showed that more than 14 million people attended a performance at one of the capital's main venues last year.
It is only the second time that this figure has been surpassed and audiences were only down by 0.79 per cent on 2009. In total, £512,331,808 was taken at the box office.
Nica Burns, president of the society, said: "Another great year for London theatre. Despite economic woes, volcanic ash and huge transport disruption, notably during our busiest time of the year at Christmas, we have managed our seventh successive year of growth at the box office."
Recently, it was revealed that The Lion King had broken its own box office record during 2010, taking more than £34 million, beating its 2009 record by £2 million.
