Experience the ‘Power of the Sea’ in Bristol
Date Posted: 31/03/14
Celebrating the emotive and atmospheric effect of the ocean, ‘Power of the Sea’ is a new exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy running from April 5th to July 6th.
Featuring a variety of artists and styles from Romanticism to contemporary, this exhibition explores the strength, danger and peace of the seas in a eclectic mix of mediums.
Of the Romantics, George Morland, Francis Danby and John Brett create tension and fear for the sea as they portray shipwrecks and the aftermaths of storms.
A collection of this kind would not be complete without the works of Turner and Constable lining the walls, and their dramatic depictions don’t disappoint in showing the power of this huge natural force.
Of the contemporary artists, Maggi Hambling has used the mediums of bronze and paint to express the immense strength of major water bodies.
Three artists using single tone photos and etchings to convey singular moments in the ocean are Norman Ackroyd, James Beale, and Thomas Joshua Cooper.
To appreciate this exhibition and this city’s marine history, book yourself into a Bristol hotel.
