Edinburgh celebrates Bonfire Night
Date Posted: 31/10/14
It's well-known that Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in England, but Bonfire Night is celebrated with equal vigour in the city of Edinburgh as it is in the capital. If you're lucky enough to be enjoying a city break in the Scottish capital during this exciting celebration of fireworks and sparklers, be sure to attend one of the events below for eye-popping displays and a great community spirit.
Hopetoun House Fireworks
The famous and beautiful Hopetoun House combines Halloween with Bonfire Night in this spectacular extravaganza, which invites people to dress up as a variety of monsters while enjoying the usual bonfire and fireworks. Taking place on November 1st, the celebration opens at 4pm, with adults tickets being £13 and childrens' tickets priced at £7. The night will be hosted by Ewen Cameron from Heart Scotland and music will be provided by the popular Edinburgh Rock Choir. Naturally, there will be prizes for the best-dressed Halloween costumes. Hopetoun House is just a half-hour drive from Edinburgh's city centre.
Limekilns Bonfire and Fireworks Display
Those yearning for a traditional bonfire night and fireworks display in the vicinity of Edinburgh need look no further than Limekilns, which ensures that its annual event involves something for everyone. Organised by the 81st Fife Sea Scout Group, the popular celebration continues its mission to help those in need with a charity collection every year. All of the profits from the £3 ticket go to helping the needed, and there are stalls selling hot food and other refreshments for those who have forgotten to eat dinner. The Limekilns Bonfire and Fireworks Display takes place on November 2nd.
Edinburgh's spectacular George Watson's Rugby Stadium plays host to a pyrotechnic performance that is sure to inspire all involved, with a fireworks showcase that is sure to light up the night sky across the city. So popular is this annual celebration that the organisers have proclaimed that in 2014, there will be two separate shows - one taking place at 4:30pm and the other at 6:45pm. There will be plenty of other attractions to entertain visitors as well, including Delighters Fire Circus Theatre Company, a rock choir and a pipe band. Don't worry if you haven't had time to eat dinner - there will be a variety of hot food and drink stalls serving up hot dogs, sausages, burgers and other tasty fairground-style cuisine. The Fireworks Extravaganza takes place on November 2nd.
Meadowbank Annual Fireworks Display
The entire family can count on having a good time at the Meadowbank Annual Firework Display, which will see thousands of locals take to the beautiful and internationally renowned Meadows park in the Lothian Gardens area dressed as their favourite superheroes. In addition to the impressive display, there will be a full programme of entertainment starting from 6:30pm that early revellers can indulge in. Tickets are priced at £6.50 and the fireworks will be accompanied by a playlist of superhero-themed music. The fun takes place on the big night itself - November 5th.
