Dozens of UK Beaches Awarded Blue Flag
Date Posted: 29/05/13
Anyone interested in taking a trip to the seaside this summer will be thrilled to know that 55 beaches around the UK have been awarded Blue Flags by Keep Britain Tidy.
For a beach to attain this award, the quality of the water must meet the European Union standard for excellence relating to several criteria, including bacteria from both sewage and livestock.
Tourists staying in Birmingham hotels, for example, can enjoy a day trip to the coast safe in the knowledge that several bathing spots in the West Midlands have been awarded the accolade, including beaches in Skegness, Mablethorpe, Sutton on Sea and Cleethorpe.
Those visiting Newcastle hotels can also take a dip in the Blue Flag-accredited waters of Tynemouth Longsands, King Edwards Bay, Whitley Bay and Sandhaven Beach.
Of the coastal stretches that didn't meet the high standards for excellence, 113 were presented with Seaside Awards by Keep Britain Tidy, while 21 beaches around the country were given both awards.
