The Devil and Mister Punch to open at the Barbican Pit in 2012
Date Posted: 15/12/11
The Devil and Mister Punch, a "tragical comedy of manslaughter and love", will open at the Barbican Pit early next year.
Previews will run from Thursday February 2nd, with theatregoers booking London hotels able to enjoy the premiere on Tuesday February 7th.
The production runs at the venue until Saturday February 25th, after it was commissioned by the Barbican, Walker Art Centre of Minneapolis and Philadelphia Live Arts Festival.
It tells the story of Punch and Judy through the eyes of Harvey and Hovey, who are a pair of broken vaudevillians down in the gutter.
The show will coincide with the 350th anniversary of Punch's first recorded appearance, with Samuel Pepys writing back in 1662 that he had seen an Italian puppet show which was described as "very pretty, the best I ever saw".
As part of the Barbican, the Pit has an important role in making the venue one of the world's leading arts centres, playing host to music, dance, film and theatre throughout the year.
