Death and the Maiden brings "drama of substance" to the West End

Death and the Maiden has opened in the West End and brings with it a "drama of substance", according to one expert.
Charles Spencer, writing for the Daily Telegraph, told those booking London theatre breaks that the production is a harrowing one which features Thandie Newton making her stage debut.
He explained that the story is set in Chile after the restoration of democracy where Paulina Salas (Newton) comes face to face with a doctor who she believes tortured her when she was imprisoned.
Salas is on the look-out for revenge and a confession of the medical professional's former crimes.
"But as well as raising important issues, the play is also gripping, with much of the intensity of a first-rate thriller. The question of whether the man Paulina promptly ties up and threatens with a gun really is her torturer remains fascinatingly ambiguous," Mr Spencer said.
Michael Billington, writing for the Guardian, said that the issues in the production are "explored with great skill", with Newton's debut performance praised for its "great assurance".
