Deadline ends as 1.8m sports fans apply for Olympic Games tickets
Date Posted: 28/04/11
The bidding process for tickets to see events at the London 2012 Olympic Games has ended, with around 1.8 million people posting applications for 20 million passes.
It surpasses the 6.6 million tickets available to UK sports fans, with half of the 645 sessions now going to a random ballot to decide who is successful.
Those booking London hotels were quick to snap up passes for track cycling and the modern pentathlon, while the opening and closing ceremonies were also among the first events to sell out.
"Certain events have seen massive demand - for example the opening ceremony, which is more than ten times oversubscribed - so there will understandably be disappointment and we will find a way to go back to those people with other tickets," explained Lord Coe, chief of the 2012 Games.
The bidding window was initially extended by a few hours with a host of late applications causing the official London 2012 website to crash close to its deadline.
