Damian Lewis for West End return
Date Posted: 24/12/14
Admired actor Damian Lewis is to return to the West End for the first time in five years, in a production of the David Mamet play American Buffalo, which is set to hit London's theatre scene next year.
Directed by Daniel Evans, the show tells the story of two junk shop workers plotting to steal a valuable coin collection, and Lewis described it as "one of the great plays of the 20th century by one of the great living playwrights".
According to the producers of the show, Lewis will play Teach, one of the trio of crooks, when the production opens next year on April 16th.
The actor rose to fame playing Brody in Homeland, and despite his absence from the West End since 2009, he has a rich background in theatre, having trained at London's prestigious Guildhall Drama School.
Lewis claimed the break from theatre was not intentional, telling the Evening Standard: "I’ve tried about three or four times in the last couple of years and things have fallen apart. With theatre, you have to plan almost a year in advance. But we got lucky – a theatre was available."
He added that the play would be a "big challenge" due to the American accent and the blue-collar status of his character, who has had a very different life to his own.
The play will run until June 27th, giving fans of Damien Lewis a limited opportunity to witness him in action. It originally premiered on Broadway in 1977. Further cast announcements for this revival will be announced in due course.
Lewis also has a crop of big-screen releases in 2015, including Our Kind of Traitor in which he stars alongside Ewan McGregor and The Silent Storm, which had a special premiere early this year at the London film festival.
