Dame Judi Dench has been voted the greatest stage actor of all time by readers of Stage newspaper.
She managed to hold off strong competition from stars of theatre breaks, including Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, Paul Scofield and Ralph Richardson.
The 76-year-old, who last played Titania in Peter Hall's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, said that she was "completely lost for words".
She made her professional debut in 1957 and has now won more Olivier awards than any other performer.
Alistair Smith, deputy editor of the newspaper, said: "The order of our readers' top ten quite closely reflected our experts' choices."
He added that the poll "celebrated the huge range of talent with which our stages have long been blessed".
Dame Judi has also enjoyed a successful movie career, winning an Academy Award for playing Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love, while also establishing herself in the role of M in the James Bond films.
