Christmas gets going in Covent Garden
Date Posted: 30/11/14
The festive season is well underway in central London, and nowhere more so than on the world-famous piazza of Covent Garden. This part of London holds a special place in the hearts of Londoners and visitors alike, so it's only appropriate that it's one of the most sumptuously decorated locations in the capital. More than 120,000 lights were switched on here earlier in the month, with many of them looped around an intricate and beautiful Christmas tree.
And that's without mentioning the programme of events taking place here. With opportunities aplenty to get involved in the festive spirit, you really won't want to miss out on what's available. Book yourself a weekend in London and see how many Covent Garden Christmas activities you can experience during your time in the capital.
Great Christmas Pudding Race
Perhaps you're aware of the egg and spoon race? Well, this fun variant sees participants dashing from one end of Covent Garden piazza to the other, while trying to keep a grip on a Christmas pudding on a plate. There is plenty of fancy dress, as well as a noble cause behind this 30-year-old tradition. All proceeds from participants and spectators go towards Cancer Research, so that we're not forgetting the true meaning of Christmas. This fantastic event is taking place this weekend - Saturday December 6th - so don't miss out.
Across the entirety of the UK, plastic Santas can be seen riding sledges over rooftops and across gardens. But perhaps the most mind boggling and resplendent one can be spotted in Covent Garden. What makes this one so incredible, you might ask? He and his sleigh, as well as the reindeer, have been constructed with more than 700,000 carefully glued-together LEGO bricks. That's nine reindeer, in case you're wondering. And a giant sack full of toys. Not to mention the man in red himself. You'll want to get a photograph of this incredible construct.
If brick reindeer aren't enough, then it's lucky that Covent Garden will play host to some real reindeer in the run-up to the big day. Cracker and Tinkerbell, as they are affectionately named, are part of Santa's reserve squad and handle official meet-and-greets with the children. They will be in the piazza during the two weekends leading up to December 25th - that's the 13th and 14th, and the 20th and 21st. You can find them on these days between noon and 4pm, and they'll be ready to pose with plenty of young fans for photos.
Associated Studios Christmas concert
Leading onto Covent Garden piazza is the stunning St Paul's Church - not to be confused with the cathedral. The inimitable impressionist Rory Bremner will be leading a fun night of mince pies and mulled wine here, with some fine and festive entertainment from the performers of Associated Studios. Expect traditional carols and readings, as well as dancing and more. Tickets cost £15 and the profits go entirely to the Studios bursary fund. It all gets underway on December 11th from 5pm until 8pm.
