Chinese New Year to take over Manchester
Date Posted: 31/12/14
Manchester, which claims to host the largest Chinese New Year celebrations in the UK outside of London, is gearing up for the festivities this year as the population prepares to say goodbye to the Year of the Horse and usher in the Year of the Sheep.
As always, the festivities promise to be worth staying in the city for, with no less than four full days of excitement planned and some 90,000 people expected to revel in the city centre during the weekend.
City Co and the Heart of Manchester BID will be responsible for putting on a truly dazzling display, which will include a Chinese food market in St Ann's Square, plenty of Chinese arts and culture at the newly reopened Whitworth Art Gallery and family craft events at Manchester Art Gallery.
Naturally, the retail sector will be getting in on the action, with an extraordinary display of red lanterns looping from one shop to the next in the weeks leading up to the festival weekend. This is sure to transform your shopping experience into a magical one.
However, the 175-foot dancing dragon is sure to be the act that everyone will be waiting to see, with the extraordinary sight set to amaze people as part of the finale. Naturally, there will also be a fireworks display to welcome in the New Year.
Those born in the Year of the Sheep are said to be well-liked, tender, polite and clever, among other qualities. However, no matter what year you were born in, you're certain to enjoy watching Manchester let its hair down in this vigorous and fascinating festival.
Be sure to spend as much time as possible in the city during the festivities - it really is worth it.
