Catalonia set to celebrate All Saints' Day
Date Posted: 30/10/14
Visitors to the Catalonian capital of Barcelona don't just have Halloween to look forward to, with its plentiful parties happening in clubs such as Razzmatazz and Arena. This week will also see the celebration of All Saints' Day ('Tots' Sants in Catalan), which takes place annually on November 1st.
Appropriately after Halloween, All Saints' Day is principally a commemoration of the dead, with many people making it a priority to take flowers to the graves of those who have passed on. For this reason, the cemeteries of Barcelona have longer opening hours, often staying open from 8am until 6pm.
Visitors are also able to indulge in a number of exciting Catalan traditions, such as La Castanyada, which involves eating roasted chestnuts, sweet potatoes and special 'panellet' cakes. These popular foodstuffs are sold in many places from stalls on the side of the road, including Plaza Urquinaona, Barceloneta and on Las Ramblas.
Foodstuffs aren't the only special purchasable goods at this time, with the streets near the centre of Eixample being transformed into a variety of exciting shades and colours as the flower sellers bring their wares to the roadside.
At Poblenou cemetery in the Sant Marti district, local performers get together year after year to perform the play Don Juan Tenorio by Jose Zorrilla. The play features scenes with tombs and ghosts, and also takes over the stages of many theatres on All Saints' Day.
Other popular activities include visiting the Montjuic cemetery museum, which rates as one of the oddest attractions in the city. It is particularly worth a mention for its outstanding collection of funeral carriages.
It's worth remembering that the vast majority of shops close on November 1st, although those geared towards the tourist industry will stay open, as well restaurants, tourist attractions and cinemas.
