Betty Blue Eyes features 'most expensive West End star'
Date Posted: 08/04/11
Betty Blue Eyes, Cameron Mackintosh's new West End production, features one of the most expensive performers those on London theatre breaks have even seen; a robotic pig.
Costing £100,000, the machine is being used instead of a real animal, which Mackintosh and director Sir Richard Eyre decided would be impossible to make use of.
"I'm told pigs are very intelligent to train, but so much hinges on the pig in this production that it had to be reliable - we couldn't run the risk of a real pig having an off-night or throwing a hissy fit due to theatrical temperament," Mackintosh told the Daily Mail.
Co-star Sarah Lancashire, known for playing barmaid Raquel in Coronation Street, joked that the robotic pig is behaving itself so far and has not thrown any diva-like demanding requests yet.
Betty Blue Eyes opens on Wednesday April 13th at the Novello Theatre, with early previews on London-Theatreland.co.uk giving it the full five stars.
