Benefits of active short breaks highlighted
Date Posted: 27/01/11
Getting out and about on short breaks is an excellent way to get back to fitness, according to an expert.
Maria Castellina, a spokesperson from the Ramblers, said that walking places very low strain on the body compared to other forms of exercise, which makes it suitable for all the family to attempt.
"It is also especially good for older people as it can help reduce the risk of osteoarthritis, help people gain strength and balance to reduce bone fractures, and dramatically cut diabetes and cardiovascular disease," she stated.
Ms Castellina went on to say that the best thing about going on a long walk is that it is absolutely free, which means that people can concentrate on getting healthy rather than their holiday budget.
Furthermore, the UK has many locations for walking, including the Cairngorms, close to Aberdeen, which is the UK's largest National Park having been forged by glaciers over 10,000 years ago.
