Barcelona Gears up for La Mercè Festival
Date Posted: 27/08/14
The end of August is imminent and the people of Barcelona are looking ahead to their largest street festival - Festes de la Mercè.
Barely a week goes by without a party in the Catalan capital, but the city's celebration of its patron saint is certainly something of a highlight as people take to the streets to enjoy the last days of the summer and welcome in the autumn.
A number of artists have now been confirmed for the celebration, including Mishima, the Klaxons and singing sensation Coriolà.
While a specific programme is not released until a few days before the festival itself, you can expect plenty of staple events that happen at every La Mercè celebration and have made it famous throughout the continent.
You can certainly count on seeing the famous Catalan Correfoc (fire run), a pyrotechnic extravaganza that sees powerful sparkler fireworks thrown into the crowds and a magnificent firebreathing dragon paraded down the streets. Protective clothing is advised.
However, those of a nervous disposition will find plenty more entertainment, such as the Gigantes Parade that sees enormous effigies of kings, queens and nobles marched through the city's charismatic Gothic Quarter.
It's also worth heading to Plaza de Sant Jaume near Barcelona Cathedral, where castell teams will be endeavoring to construct human towers. These impressive structures are thrilling to watch and the sport is a very Catalan tradition.
This is without mentioning all of the street performance in the form of music and dance that takes over the city throughout the La Mercè festival - something in the atmosphere prompts spontaneous performances throughout the city centre.
2014's extravaganza takes place over five days from Saturday September 19th until Wednesday the 24th, and there is plenty to see and do as Barcelona lets its hair down for the wildest party of the year. Make sure you don't miss out.
