Alice in Wonderland for new stage adaptation

Lewis Carroll's classic tale Alice in Wonderland has had more than its fair share of adaptations over the years, but that hasn't stopped Blur singer Damon Albarn having a go at creating a new musical version.
The production, entitled Wonder.land, will get a debut at the Manchester International Festival this coming July, as led by artistic director Rufus Norris.
However, those expecting a straightforward book-to-stage adaptation are in for a surprise. Newly released details about the story reveal that audiences will follow 12-year-old Aly through the rabbit hole, and that Alice will merely be her alter ego in a virtual world.
Albarn, famed for singing in Blur and Gorillaz, told the press that he has written the music alongside Moira Buffini, who has created lyrics and a script.
"I'm fascinated by the idea of going down a rabbit hole, the otherworldliness and what that might mean," Albarn said, adding that Carroll's story is extremely close to his heart as he first read Alice in Wonderland as a child.
"The Queen of Hearts, The Duchess, White Rabbit, Caterpillar were the most threatening characters of my childhood. I was genuinely very frightened of them as a kid," he added.
According to the creative team, the most challenging part of reinventing the story was coming at it from an angle that would suit the digital age, while retaining the iconic original characters that are imprinted in everybody's minds.
The production coincides with the 150th anniversary of the publication of Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
Wonder.land is slated to open at the Manchester International Festival on July 2nd before moving to London in November for a stint at the National Theatre on the South Bank. Talks are also underway that will see the production come to Paris in 2016.
