Addams Family headed for the West End?

The Broadway production of the Addams Family that debuted on the Great White Way five years ago could finally be headed to the West End in 2015, with the authors confirming they are looking for opportunities in London's Theatreland.

Originally opening in 2010 to poor reviews, the show defied the critics and proved immensely popular with audiences, who kept it afloat for a year and a half before it went off on a national tour of North America.

Based on the original Addams Family characters created by Charles Addams, which were first developed as part of a single-panel comic strip, the theatrical adaptation has long been available for local amateur dramatics groups to try their hand at - a production on the Edinburgh Fringe last year proved especially popular.

Parents Morticia and Gomez feature prominently in the production, as well as other favourites including children Wednesday and Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Cousin Itt and butler Lurch.

"The Addams Family musical authors are considering many exciting opportunities for The Addams Family in the UK territory, including the West End," a representative of Theatrical Rights Worldwide told Whatsonstage.com, adding that the amateur version remains fully licensed.

Speculation has long been rife over when a West End production will eventually materialise, with some London-based commentators suggesting that late 2015 and early 2016 could be feasible.

The show features music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa of The Wild Party, and a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice.

If the Addams Family is confirmed for a 2015 debut in London, it will make for an extremely exciting 2015, with a plethora of shows taking up residence in London that include classic comedies and spectacular new musicals.
