3 of Britain’s Zoos Named in Europe’s Top 10

The UK is home to many fantastic attractions, with families in particular likely to enjoy visiting a zoo during a short break away.
TripAdvisor has compiled a list of the ten best zoos in Europe and, although none of the UK’s animal parks took the top spot, there were three included in the list.
Coming in second was Chester Zoo, with visitors praising the enclosures for the fact that they are as close to the animals’ natural environments as possible, as well as the health of the creatures in the park.
Further down the list at number eight was Colchester Zoo, where the variety of animals on show was highlighted, while Paignton Zoo Environmental Park took ninth spot and was also commended for the health of its inhabitants.
And it seems that Chester Zoo has made such an impression on its visitors that it’s even made it into the top ten zoos in the world list, coming in at number six in the global poll carried out by the travel website.
Colchester and Paignton zoos both featured in the top 25 in the world, sitting at 17 and 21 respectively. Dublin Zoo, meanwhile, narrowly missed out on a spot in the top ten in Europe, being ranked 11th, but snuck into the world’s top 25 at 24.
Speaking to the Independent, managing director of Chester Zoo Jamie Christon said they were “absolutely delighted” with the result, and went on to thank everyone who has visited and donated to help keep the zoo, which is a charity-funded project, going.
Chester Zoo is spread across 110 acres and is home to 11,000 animals, with around 400 species represented in the park. In addition to running the zoo, the organisation is involved in a variety of conservation programmes and research around the world.
With so many fantastic zoos and animal parks spread across the UK, there are plenty of options for families on weekend breaks, no matter where you’re going. Blackpool Zoo, for instance, was named the fifth best in the UK, with the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens in Burford, Knowsley Safari Park in Liverpool and the Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park in Stirling among the other attractions making it into the top ten in the country.
