We recently went for a short stay at the Marriot. The grounds, interior and facilities were what you would expect from a 4 star hotel. The staff were exceptionally friendly, polite and helpful. Unfortunately my wife had a small problem with one her meals. When we reported this to management it was dealt with in a very understanding and generous . manner. Many thanks to Ellie, manager on reception. Collapse

Stayed for one night with the children. Very friendly staff. Leisure club small but perfectly formed and children allowed as long as they were accompanied. Excellent breakfast, and midday check out, which allowed time to enjoy the facilities. Situated literally right on the edge of the racecourse. Good parking facilities and easy to locate. Collapse

We were lucky enough to be able to book one of the lovely rooms with a balcony, overlooking York Racecourse so this was extra special. The room had a huge, really comfortable bed and the view was lovely. The balcony had a table and chairs so we could sit out there with a coffee - we were very lucky that the weather was mild enough in York in April to do that! The staff at the Marriott were very polite and helpful and everyone speaks and says good morning, even the housekeeping staff we passed in the corridor, which gives a pleasant welcome to the hotel. We shall definitely be staying there again. Collapse

I booked the Marriott hotel York due to the brand name. Me and my wife decided to book the grandstand room with views of the racecourse, and even although we were on the ground floor, the views were still very good. From there on the experience was ruined due to various things. The rooms are very dated, and need an immediate makeover. Overall the cleanliness of the room was terrible, the curtains had the start of mold forming, there was also food stains on them. The bathroom was a good size, but very dirty, the shower door was full of dirt and grime around the bottom, black mold spots on ceiling and the sink overflow looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while. But the worst and most disgusting was the blood stains on the mattress protector, the stain was fully visible through the sheet, having reported this, the housemaid was sent to the room to change the bedding, and she could not apologise enough. After stripping the bed, more stains were found on the quilt, but it did all get changed. But from here on in, the break was ruined. Breakfast started @ 06:30 me and my wife got down @ 07:15 and most of the breakfast was lukewarm/cold, when I highlighted this to a staff member, I was told breakfast starts at 06:30 and obviously it would start to go cold, that wasn't really the answer I was looking for. The cutlery we had had dried food on the knifes, we swapped them for the ones on the opposite table, we never complained about this because we felt it would have been pointless. We made sure we got down earlier next time for a hot breakfast. The staff in general were good, but there is some staff that don't care about the residents, I would go as far to say some had bad attitudes. After my complaint about the stained bedding in my room, no one from management came to see us to try and explain why this happened, and to apologise for this, so this tells me the management don't care about the residents. So basically my point to everyone planning on booking this hotel, please read the negative comments. And if after reading them you still decide to stay at this hotel, please check the bedding when you get to your room. When I went to check out, the receptionist typed my details into the computer to ensure I didn't owe them any money, she then cleared me to leave, my point here is, every other hotel I have stayed in, including 2 stars, the receptionist always ask the question, "how was your stay, hope to see you again soon" Not a thing was said. I did ask to speak to management, but surprise surprise, no one from management was available. All of these points I have highlighted shouldn't happen in a 4 star hotel. On a positive note, the tea & coffee supplied in the room was nice. JL. Collapse
