Visited on 12th June (pre-booked) with a group of 13. Wheelchair access was by folding ramp and easy. Greeted by warm very friendly and helpful staff, very few people around but staff very attentive. Wide range of food available are good value prices served hot I had chicken stuffed with black pudding which was great. Everyone enjoyed their food and the night was a great success. Wide choice of cask beers, and wines plus tradition beers such as John Smiths smooth for people like me. All in all a great place to eat with ample parking and B&B available including facilities for wheelchair users. Access around the interior was easy Collapse

Stopped here last night, we were on route back to the Lake DISTRICT after spending some time down south and wanted to break the trip up with a night/day in York. Just happened to drive past the place and it looked great, pulled into car park and had quick look on there website rooms listed at £75. Walked into a busy bar and waited for while as only two visible members of staff were in the bar, when one came free I asked if there was a room, I was told £100 please, I asked if the £100 was a different room to the ones listed online for £75. She said oh sorry we duel price our rooms it's fine you can have it for that price. Anyway we had our 5mt old baby so we went straight into the bar for food as we wanted to get the baby to bed. I would say the food was just ok pub food nothing exceptional or even good for that matter, so after eating we went to our room, which turned out to be in a detached block behind the pub. We were the only guests staying. My partner took the little one into the room (no 5) while I emptied the car, when I returned she told me to look in the bathroom. To my horror there was a massive turd still on the toilet pan! I intally laughed it off and flushed it away, I then noticed the sink and shower tray were wet, so I looked into the shower and there were long and short hairs all over. Apart from the fact the bathroom had not been cleaned the rest of the room seemed ok, it was however masivley out dated all floral and brown wood with horrid pictures very dated and defiantly not £100 pounds worth that's for sure. I went back to the bar and quietly had a word about the room, I told the girl behind the bar (who was lovely) about the toilet and showed her the pictures of the bathroom. She said they done have house keeping on weekends and give me the key to another room and apologised. 2nd room (no 2) just as out dated as the first, and the bed was so lumpy I think it would of been comfy sleeping in my car. So after a pretty poor nights sleep we went for breakfast however the doorway back into the bar from the hotel block was locked, so we had to run with the baby round the outside of the hotel and main pub building to the front entrance in the rain. Once inside the only visable person was an old lady hoovering the bar, she said were not open yet. I said we are staying here the doors locked from the hotel. Oh I wil get someone for you and off she went, a lady showed up couple of minutes later and said there's your menus what do you want. We picked our breakfast which was fine. We then went pack to room and packed car, as I left I went back into the pub to hand keys in and check out, no one around still just the old lady hoovering I asked her is he could get someone and she did. I said that's us, she said ok see ya! No how was your night ? No how was your breakfast? No sorry about the drama with the dirty bathroom. No nothing really. This hotel in my opinion is out dated and over priced and other than the young girl who checked us in and served us when we got our meal and the cleaner who was also nice enough as she took the time to say hello. The rest of what little staff they have could relay do with some hospitality training asap. Collapse

We spent yet another weekend in The Windmill one week ago and thoroughly enjoyed it all. There was one housekeeping glitch which was quickly and effectively dealt with, and all was well. We had a comfortable, quiet room - very restful. Also, we ate well, enjoying dinner on both nights. Do go for the Specials - they're unusual and delicious! On the Saturday, we enjoyed a long, leisurely lunch, and - given that there were 10 of us, including our 6 young grandchildren - the staff managed it all patiently, cheerfully and attentively. Well done! This was the case throughout our stay: at check in/out, in the bar and the restaurant the staff were on the ball. We'll be back. Collapse
