To complete my vacation I had to make a trip to this historic property. I was told it would be closing and I knew I had to have the Astoria Experience. That's precisely what I got. Upon arriving the bellman took my bags, gave me a ticket and told me my bags would be upstairs waiting in my room (Yaaass) when you step in the first lobby, I couldn't help but look up. Such intricate details to the architecture. It's light and bright. Checking in was a breeze - being a HHonors member has it perks! Two bottles of water per day, for free. I received a complimentary beverage per day (alcohol, up to $25 at any of their restaurants) and a discount at the restaurant. My room chosen on the app wasn't available so I agreed to a different room (apology was given) and I received a Lexington Ave view room. The rooms were gorgeous, as if time stood still. Marble bathroom with Ferragamo Toiletries. THE MOST COMFORTABLE BED EVER. I say that honestly, I have every intention of purchasing one. Granted, the property is old so there was flaws but none that annoyed me too bad to deduct a star. The AC/Heat is older so it takes a tad to warm up a room; the plugs to charge your items aren't on the floor but on the side of the desk. Tv has no Netflix or Hulu. Breakfast. It's expensive, I understand but ORDER IT. I ordered a Belgian Waffle, Omelette and potatoes. Best waffle I've had to date. After 20/30 mins (was taking a shower) it was crispy and delicious. The cinnamon whip is a great touch. Things to remember and hints. - The hot water in the bathroom takes a long time to warm up; be patient. - Take a stroll of the hotel at night. Not nearly as many folks and you can take your time. - Walk towards the business center (make a left at the check in desks) and sniff - THAT FRAGRANCE IS DEVINE. - If you stay on the Lexington Avenue side; make that your entrance & exit. Easier access and there's a escalator. - Take a Coffee at Peacock Alley in the Libby. Just look at all the detail and history in one room. The clock is stunning. - Don't touch the minibar except for your water. Self explanatory. - Visit the Hilton Club rep - yes, she's trying to sell something but if you put blinders on she'll give you a temp pass that'll get you 15% off certain restaurants in the city; you're welcome. - The ice (from ice maker) melts quick! - Enjoy it. This hotel has so much history; soak it up. Collapse
Grand Old Waldorf is no longer

Beautiful, tired hotel in a superb location in NYC. Be aware the 3D pix if the rooms do not accurately reflect the room. Restaurant prices are strictly for those on corporate expense accounts. I miss the Waldorf of the 90's.

I was really looking forward to staying here, as part of a trip that I organised months ago, to celebrate my daughter's 21st Birthday. Let's start with the doorman, who was very polite, helped with our luggage out of the taxi, but then told us he didn't come in, and that we had to carry our own cases up a flight of stairs, blaming the taxi driver for bringing us to the wrong door. Rebecca on reception was lovely, upgrading us so we could have free wi-fi and water, and finding us a front facing room. The room was very average, I have to say, for a 5 star hotel. The sink in the bathroom had tiny cracks in it, and the shower ran either hot or cold, and took some time to redirect from the bath to the shower, so long in fact that you could be mistaken that it was ever going to come out of the shower nozzle. There is no main light in the bedroom, which means that when you come in,you have to cross the room to put a light on, not easy when it is dark in the room at 5 pm on a January evening. We had left a light on, but the housekeeping service had turned it off when the room was made up. The breakfast spread is awesome, but again the attention to detail was missing. We we sat at a table with only 1 cup, and a knife missing, and I observed other tables that were not completely laid when other guests were seated at. Mid-way through our stay, we learnt that the Waldorf is due to close very soon, and that repairs were not being undertaken, which may expain the state of the sink in our bathroom. So sad. Collapse
