We stayed at the W for 5 days in March. Overall, it was fine--but if we return to the area I will likely shop around for another property. Highs and lows: What I liked: 1. Front desk, concierge, and housekeeping staff were fantastic. Very friendly and helpful, without exception. 2. Room upgrade on arrival (thanks Gavon!) 3. The art on the property--wow. Very nice collection of sculpture, paintings and photography. 4. The overall aesthetic is sleek and elegant, with hits of South Beach fun. 5. Our room was right across from the ice machine--usually a deal breaker for me but because the ice machine was behind closed doors we never heard it. 6. Bed was pretty comfy--two types of pillows, one feather and one foam. 7. Great proximity to South Beach restaurants, clubs, and people watching (on the north edge of all the fun stuff) 8. Water and city view from the balcony. 9. Steps away from beach and boardwalk. What I didn't care for: 1. Low flow toilet that took 3 flushes to flush. 2. Low flow shower that pushed small amounts of water out at high pressure--like showering with water needles. Hard on a sunburn. 3. Bedside lamps with brown shades that were too far away to read under, and too dark to use to read in bed. 4. The cabinet that holds coffee cups and glassware is so high that this 5'6" person had to stand on tiptoe to reach even the items on the edge. 5. Two people, two bathrobes, lots of towels...and a single hook in the bathroom. No place to hang or drape hand towels, wash cloths, etc. 6. I have long been puzzled why Starwoods properties provide pod coffee machines with Starbucks coffee pods that are too large for them. It's a trend. But this pod coffee machine is especially small, and if you don't fold the pods just right the water spills out and over. 7. Usually I review hotel restaurants separately but this bears mention--The Dutch (where you might be inclined to eat breakfast) is the worst value I've seen. For example, $40 pp for their modest breakfast buffet. A couple of tips should you decide to stay here--the sunset from the Swish and Swing courts is lovely and likely to be private. And we only explored the spa on our last day but wish we had done it sooner. Even if you don't book a service, guests can take advantage of the eucalyptus steam showers, and/or have a drink on the spa balcony. Collapse

I've never met a W I didn't like, but the W South Beach may be my favorite. Our room was a good size and well appointed with a balcony overlooking the pool and the beach. We spent most of the day relaxing by the pool, soaking up the sun and poolside DJ session. The drinks were pricey, at $20 per, but the Watermelon Krush was good enough to make me stop counting. I stayed at the W South Beach for a conference that I was attending. After I got back, someone said "I think that I'm too old for W hotels." I think I know what she means. The few W hotels I've stayed in have oozed cool and the W South Beach is no exception. But, there were some fabulous things about my room and some odd features that disappointed me. Fabulous: high floor with balcony with ocean view. Can't be beat! The size of the room was very large, almost a mini-suite. But, the lighting was very poor. No lamp on the desk and no lamp or overhead lighting near the sofa. There was a huge 70's-ish triple globe lighting fixture that was the room's major light source, aside from the light from outside. The support and features of the conference were fabulous. And, at the price, which I realize was discounted for the conference, to get only 1 night's turn down service was disappointing. Collapse

Being a loyal SPG Platinum member and very fond of The St. Regis, I have not stayed at many W Hotels that I was very impressed with. I can not tell you how thorough and friendly the staff at this W were to my wife and I. The poolside service and quality of food and drink were as good as i have ever had. Great food especially for poolside. And it is a busy scene. Pool attendants, food and beverage personal, etc. were everywhere, well orchestrated with headset communication and never dragging their feet. Of course there is your typical W vibe, young clientele, techno music by the pool (I would like to see a better mix of music as no one would be offended. think its a Miami thing.) Loved having the free W bikes to cruise the 3 mile beach walk. Our Fantastic Suite was huge and comfortable. HATS OFF TO GUILLERMO AND MANON AT THE CONCIERGE DESK. Trust their advice which I hardly ever do;)) because they had great recommendations. They were top notch and first class. Just booked some family members there for later this spring. Collapse

We stayed at The Residences at the W for my daughter's spring break. Here are my pros and cons of the experience: Pros - ~ 2 bed/1 bath condo was perfect, with a kitchen ~ Staff was very friendly and would bend over back wards for you ~ The views are perfect with angled balconies so that everyone can see the ocean ~ Location - easy walk to Lincoln Rd. and great area restaurants Cons - ~ THEY DON'T RECYCLE (I couldn't believe it - staff member told me they don't and would take my gathered recycling to the trash. Seriously, in this day and age, that's horrible. Meanwhile, there were recycling bins on Lincoln Rd.....) ~ They charge for beach equipment. Staying at an expensive, all-inclusive and they charge $200 for an oceanfront cabana and $25 for an umbrella. At least an umbrella should be complimentary ~ Smoking allowed by the pool - quite annoying, especially when we were eating ~ Music by the pool sounds like you're at a club and deters from relaxing Had a good time but not sure we'll be going back due to the cons we experienced.
