My partner and I stayed in this property for 4 nights mainly to celebrate a landmark anniversary. We were upgraded beforehand to a slightly larger room on the 17th (out of 19th) floor. The room was quite large with a seated window area and a very nice bathroom with sunken garden tub and separate shower. The first afternoon we were there we tried to relax in the room but alas some construction noise made it a little difficult to do so, despite being on a higher floor which was a little disappointing. We dined out on the first evening and wanted to enjoy a cocktail upon our return only to be told that the 'Rooftop Bar' (which is by the way on the 2nd floor not rooftop) would be closing at 10pm, something I found quite strange due to several guests still being in the bar area. There was very little ambience in the bar area, the seating being both stark and depleted somewhat. The next morning we went down to breakfast, having to seat ourselves after several minutes waiting, primarily due to the lack of staff on duty, one staff memeber on duty (or visible) who seemed quite overwhelmed with everything. We were not offered coffee, juices, toast etc....until I saw one other table with a pot of coffee and then had to get someone's attention to ask for the item. I decided that I needed to speak with the manager, Sean who was on duty, this was supposed to be a special weekend for us and it had not started well. To be fair to the hotel Sean's customer service handling the matters that I raised with him were both professional and empathetic, perhaps realizing that some of the issues that I had raised were a common problem. Sean took care of us for the remainder of our stay, sending up a complimentary bottle of champagne and petit fors, he also apologized profusely for the inconvenience of the matters raised and offered to redeposit the one night of points back into my account as well as taking care of some room charges. I would have rather not had to deal with these issues but at least they were rectified and addressed. Maybe the hotel needs to have a step back to see where they at the renovations and maybe some staffing problems in order that it can go on to be a top quality Marriott property in the future. My wife and I stayed at this property for a single night. We liked the modern style and decor of the lobby, but the bar/lounge area seemed "squeezed" into the lobby. We also enjoyed the decor in the room and the bed was comfortable. After entering our room, we noticed that some toiletries were missing from the bathroom, so we called to ask for them (and a staff member -after some time- provided the missing items). The room was undoubtedly clean, but the carpet was stained, as so were a couple of towels. Not what you expect from a Marriott property. In general, the staff was extremely friendly and this is definitely a plus. However, I was slightly annoyed when I was stopped by a lobby staff member asking me if I was interested in a Marriott Resort offer in San Diego and proceeded in explaining the offer in detail. Nice decor but had surprisingly many issues. Disappointing service.

I visit a LOT of Marriott properties (>100 days last year) every year and although I'd like to rate this one better I had way too many problems at this property and very lack luster service. Planned to stay for 6 nights but checked out after 3 days. The PROS: Very nice decor, furniture, finishings, and good quality comfortable bed. The CONS: - Understaffed, workers were stressed, poor service responses to requests. - A/C was not working in my 19th floor room upon check-in. I asked for engineering to check it while I was out for dinner. Upon return inquired again and the front desk person said it was checked and working now. But when I returned to the room it was 79 degrees and blowing warm air. I don't think they checked on it because it was obviously NOT working. At 3rd request they offered a different room where the A/C was working fine. (But I shouldn't have needed 3 requests and a room change to solve this problem.) - Breakfast servers too busy to offer service. No one was available to seat me for breakfast 3 DAYS IN A ROW. When no one staff was in the room I would just sit down and serve myself. I had the buffet so didn't need much help but it would have been nice to be offered water or asked if I needed anything. Only 1 of 3 days did a server even speak to me at breakfast. - All Elevators broken for >> 2 hours. All 3 elevators were "off-line" upon returning from dinner. Fire department was on site helping to get guests out of "off-line" elevator. - TERRIBLE Valet Service. After calling for my car ~20 min in advance each day, I still had to wait an additional 10 minutes or so once comping to the lobby. This hotel has NO SELF PARK so you MUST use VALET service. - LOCATION: Not great, there are very few restaurants close to the hotel. There is one brew pub around the corner but other than that it is about a 6 block walk until you start seeing restaurants in the Little Italy. Summary: Nice physical hotel but SERVICE NEEDS MAJOR IMPROVEMENT. Not up to Marriott standards for my stay. Not even close. Collapse

The service at the Renaissance is fabulous. Their staff is well trained and they really make you feel at home. The only downside of the Renaissance is their restaurant is expensive and what they serve is not worth the money. So, is the valet service. But, then again, the location is downtown San Diego. We only had breakfast at the hotel once. For other meals it made more sense to visit one of the nearby coffee shops or restaurants. All in all, a wonderful, very pleasant place to spend a few days, but only if you want to be in the central, downtown area. Collapse

This will be my second year staying at the renaissance and I couldn't be happier. The rooms are clean and quiet the front desk staff is friendly and professional. But I want to take the time to mention the manager ZSofia, the bartender mae and barback taylor. These three employees went above and beyond to make my stay memorable. Friendly, courteous professional and top notch Customer service. ( which is rare these days) normally I like to explore the neighborhood for bars or restaurants. Because of these three there was no need. I recommend the renaissance just for that. Collapse
