I came for the brand; I left missing something

I was visiting New York for a whirlwind weekend of visiting family and friends. I wanted to find a location that would be accessible to all, knowing that I would be hopping from Randalls Island to Chelsea, from Hell’s Kitchen to Gramercy Park. I had a reservation elsewhere and double checked on the SPG app mid-week for the heck of it to find a room at the W New York for $170 plus taxes. It was lower than the other reservation. Plus, I like the W brand. So I switched. In addition, I figured that it would be in an ideal location for all the traipsing I would be doing. I was right by 51st Street Station on Lex (which was perfect for getting to Gramercy and Randalls Island.) I had an issue with my credit card. (My fault - not the hotel’s) So when I arrived, I headed for the front desk. I was quickly greeted and was checked into my room. Because of my status, I was upgraded to a larger room but I lost my king sized bed in the upgrade. All the smaller king sized bed rooms were occupied. I was disappointed (and not angry) because the treat for me in staying in a hotel room is having an entire king sized bed to myself. The clerk was apologetic. Frankly, it’s not life or death, so I wasn’t going to make any more of a big stink then a pouty lip for a brief moment. The room was in a contemporary style: light gray carpet, vibrant lilac wallpaper, purple accents in the artwork and throughout the room. It also utilized some space saving designs. The room was small, too. As I’ve said before in my New York City hotel reviews: “It's New York; this isn't a complaint, it's a fact.” However, this time, I did feel that the room was not as small as other rooms. There was ample space in the bathroom and around the bed. It would have been cozy, but I could have shared this space with another person. I know I’m being picky but it didn’t feel much like a W. It was more on the aloft side of the brand spectrum. The hotel didn’t have as much of the unique contemporary style that is the hallmark of a W. There were hints but not the bold commitment to the individuality that I feel reflects the brand as there are in the W San Francisco, W London - Leicester Square or even the W Washington, D.C. (the former Hotel Washington.) I am going to temper this critique with the fact that my room as $170 (total $198.58) a night – pretty darn good for NYC. I didn’t take my usual time to explore the area since I was bouncing from place to place to place. As I said, being on the 6, I was able to get around New York and I took ubers when I didn’t have time to spare. I was highly scheduled during this last visit and I ended up being so tired that I didn’t even go out to meet up with friends for a drink at the bar. Yet, there are many amenities on Lexington Ave and the surrounding area, so I didn’t lack a thing. Collapse

Ended up with an interior room that was very small and dark. Furniture is starting to look tired and has scratches all over. Carpet had stains as well as the bathroom floor. The bathroom was very small and you had to lower the toilet cover in order to flush because there is no room around given the shower glass and shelf. The noisy fan was the most disappointing aspect as you could not hear the TV with the fan on and sleeping became a problem. Service overall was average at best. Coffee in the complimentary station at lobby always was out and staff were not particularly helpful to solve and replenish. There are better options in NY for that value. Collapse
Doesn't live up to its name.

How is it that I have visited this hotel twice and have received sub part service even when they were trying to make up for the sub part service I received during the last visit? I was promised an upgraded suite for the inconvenience I received during my first visit. I made arrangements at least 2 months in advance with the hotel only to find that this hotel dropped the ball again! I was only told this after I tried to check in for the room I was promised. To make matters worse, Michael a manager on duty at the time spoke to me as if I were a peasant and I should just be happy to be at this hotel where you can order a chicken quesadilla, COLD sweet potato fries and TERRIBLE chicken tenders for $85 (automated gratuity). This hotel should be called something else because it doesn't live up to its name unless all W Hotels operate this way. Collapse
Nicely designed rooms, but noisy fans.

However, I have to saw the fans in the my room were very noisy. I had to turn it off to sleep....but then it got hot. I'm not sure if all rooms were the same....but this just didn't work for me. If t wasn't for this issue it would get a 5 star. Collapse

For the following reasons: 1. Room modelled along the lines of a small walk in wardrobe - there was no space to even open my suitcase. The bathroom resembled a cupboard; 2. Very bad service - curt, sometimes to the point of hostile. Completely at odds with the normal high NYC standard; 3. Despite the room, taxes and incidentals being paid for, my credit card was charged at check in - the receptionist didn't know what she was doing and couldn't explain why she charged my card; and 4. The crowning glory - my attempt to get my suit pressed - resistance is accepting it (we have 24 hours laundry but it's done offsite and the pick up as already left) but they finally did. Was to be given to me at 7 am but after two follows up by me at 7.09 and 7.25 am I finally get the manager who told it wasn't ready because "someone on his team dropped the ball". If they had bothered informing me even at 7, I would have pressed another suit myself (which I did) and been on time for my first meeting (which I wasn't). Have stayed at the W at Times Square twice before and the experience was good. Difficult to believe the two hotels are in the same city and managed by the same operator. Not going to risk staying at a W again. Collapse
