We stayed here for a week, my husband, my 30 something niece and myself. So review is from two age perspectives, it was everything we wanted in a hotel, away from busy tourist route, but close to transport links. Coffee and breakfasts were great. We had the best time! We ate in the restaurant and found it to be excellent! The staff were all very friendly and most efficient. We had a marvellous time on Lido and when we return one spring or autumn we will definitely stay on lido, in hotel Villa Mbabane. Thank you for having us! Collapse

If you think of the elongated island of Lido as a needle with its threading end pointing north, then Villa Mabapa is the pupil in the eye of that needle. And a very pretty pupil it is. Surrounded by the ocean in front, a graveyard at it rear, and to the side a miniscule, rarely used airport (Nicelli, the place where in 1934 Hitler first met Mussolini), it’s an isolated and quiet location fit for relaxed contemplation and gathering strength between beach, golf or museum outings. I personally chose it primarily because of a very inviting off-season deal, while also being intrigued at the idea of staying not in Venice itself but on the opposite shore with a full view of the mighty Dolomites towering over the city’s tower-studded skyline, which is exactly what I got. Now, in its summary on Google, the location of Villa Mabapa is described as being “a 1-minute walk from the Lido San Nicolò ferry terminal”, which is technically correct – but misleading if not altogether useless unless you are disabled and/or plan to bring your car from the mainland. The boat stop you will be using for getting to and from the heart of Venice is the Santa Maria Elisabetta (called Lido S.M.E. on maps and signs), which is located a 10-15 minute coastside walk from the hotel. Next to this busy boat stop is a small city centre, which includes cafes, restaurants and a large supermarket. At the opposite side of said city centre, you can see the sad remains of the grandiose Hotel des Bains, famous from Thomas Mann’s 1912 novel “Der Tod in Venedig”, before returning to the comfort of your own hotel. A former private residence, the main building of Villa Mabapa is rather small, so two annexes have been added. During my stay, the place felt a bit understaffed, with the reception desk frequently unmanned. But whenever present, the skilled and hard-working staff was endlessly friendly and helpful. For instance, I checked in an hour too early, but twenty minutes later my room had been swiftly made ready. A small but clean and very pleasant room, with only minor problems: The Wi-Fi-signal was notably weaker in the end opposite the door, and the loose cushion repeatedly had me sliding off the comfy chair. I never used the hotel’s own restaurant, but everything offered in the breakfast room was excellent. I ended staying longer than initially planned, and the only reason I finally left for another hotel is that although there were almost no other guests (the last morning, I was all alone in the breakfast room), I was never offered an upgrade (which I was at the other hotel, upon arrival). Better luck with that next time, I’m sure. And I’d certainly love to return. Collapse

I can not remember the name of the woman at the front desk but she is the only woman that works the front desk that I saw but she was awesome! Not only was she so friendly she was nice enough to let us check in VERY early which was a big deal after traveling all night, she also upgraded our room because it was my boyfriends birthday and the room wasn't occupied. The room had a beautiful view and private terrace. The breakfast is delicious and the rest of the staff is so nice! I will always stay here when I travel to Venice. It is so nice being out of the rush of Venice. This is a nice quiet island. Take advantage of the free bicycles!!! It is so nice to take a bike ride through the town and they have several available to use! Collapse
