Just returned home from an excellent long weekend with friends and family at hotel Villamari. Friendly staff, hotel spotlessly clean and food & drink are good value for money. Ideally located for the Metro - 5 min walk which gives you access to Parc Guill, Camp Nou & Harbour all on the same L3 line and same distance to bus stops. Less than 10 min walk to the Fountains and Placa Espanya. Although there is no shuttle bus to the Airport, the bus stop is the second stop (Placa Espanya) on A1 bus from the airport T3 (and approx 3 min walk to the Hotel. This was our first city break and we managed to travel on the local transport very easily without any stress - although you could opted for the open top tour bus @ €29 pp per day. Beautiful city, well worth a visit. Collapse

Very poor lady reception during at check in counter. Waited for 20minutes before I got my room card. I asked if i can paid in advance the full amount of room and breakfast. The lady mentioned it can not be done since we also have reservation in a conference room. I told her that i can pay it seperately. But the lady told me it is impossible. After few minutes they told me it can be paid in advance. Crazy....very poor customer service even they speak good english. Collapse

Whilst looking for hotels in Barca i found a lovely 3 star hotel, reviews were great and it was centrally located. We decided on the Hotel Vilamari because it was centrally located, a 4 star hotel with good reviews and a Turkish bath and spa. We paid the extra for the standard room so that we could have a larger room with a 'city view', a queen sized bed, and breakfast. My husband and I enjoy to city break. Over the last 4 years we have stayed in 3, 4 and 5 star hotels all over Europe, including Edinburgh, London, Rome, Venice, Madrid, Marbella, Majorca, Paris, Portugal, Malta and many other places. Therefore we understand the value for money in regards to a city centre hotel, and what a certain star rating will get you in Europe. With that in mind we are bitterly disappointed and aggrieved with our stay at the Hotel Vilamari. When we 1st arrived at the hotel I immediately noticed and was shocked to see that the outside was basic and quite dirty. The lobby area was appealing to the eye so I did not let the outside deter me. We checked in and we're given our room card. My 1st impression of the room was that a mistake had been made and that we had been given an economy room instead of the standard room. The room was tiny, barely enough for the double bed and 1 desk. There was no usable wardrobe space. The wardrobe was no more than 10cm deep, therefore you had to hang your clothes on a horizontal angle, which meant you could only get max 3 items in there. There were no draw space or any other type of storage, there was just no space. Because the room was so small even having our cases out in the open meant we were skipping over them at every turn. There was no mirror over the desk, the only mirror being on the other end of the room hanging in the door, no where near any plug sockets, so getting ready was incredibly difficult. The desk was situated directly in front of the window, so you couldn't actually get to the window to see the city view. In regards to the view, it was not a city view by any means. Across from the hotel was a large set of residential buildings and this was what you looked out at, a row of apartments with people's outside AC systems, washing lines and TV sets. This was however slightly better than the alternative 'no view' rooms, as those rooms have an internal window which faces the internal lifts! An incredibly ridiculous design that the hotel room would have no natural light from a window, and the window they did have you have to keep the curtains drawn so that people using the lift do not look direct into your room. My 4 star hotel room had no bath, there was a crack in the base of the shower so old water seeped through and smelt, no bin anywhere in the room and no iron. The bed was advertised as being queen sized. It was not Queen sized, it was definitely a standard double bed. I have a King at home and this bed was smaller than that. It certainly was not Queen size. This is where the hotel will respond and talk about the free bottles of water that they provide, which was a couple of tiny 33cl bottles; hardly justifies their 4 star rating! The bottles of water where indeed needed though because the AC was terrible! It hardly took any of the heat from the room and I struggled to sleep with the heat every night. So after a disappointing start my husband and I decided we would check out the spa. We were informed that if we wanted to use the spa we needed to call down in advance so they could 'turn it on' something that confused me at the time, but I made the call. 30 minutes later we went downstairs to the 'Turkish bath' to find that it was an old portable sauna cabin that had been tucked into the corner of the changing rooms next to a make shift gym that looked like someone's personal gym in their garage. The sauna was tiny, it looked old and unappealing, and further more it was still turned off. So our call 30 minutes previous had been completely ignored. At this stage we no longer needed the sauna because it wasn't worth using anyway. I am still confused how a hotel can describe themselves as having a spa when they have no pool, no jacuzzi, a substandard gym, and a portable cabin sauna that you have to ask them to turn on before you want to use it!! Enough was enough and I decided to go down to reception and complain. I explained all of the above to the receptionist staff and that I had spent money expecting a 4 star hotel and amenities. I was met with a blank stare and shrugged shoulders. I was told there was nothing that could be done, that in Barca their Queen size bed was the small bed, followed by a king, and that I could swap to a room with the lift view as that had a bath but this was all they could do. To say I was disgusted, angry and utterly disappointed is an understatement. I thought that maybe the breakfast might save the hotel. I was wrong. The cold buffet was pleasant, with pastries, bread, cheese, meat and others. The hot food was 2 star standard. There were tiny party sausages, scrambled egg that you had to cut into chunks it had been there for so long. It definitely looked like it had been reheated on a few occasions, and the 'bacon' looked like warmed up Palma ham that was all stuck together. It tasted disgusting and I cannot believe they are allowed to serve that slop. We would have been met with better at the 3 star we were looking at in the 1st place. It is NOT a 4 star hotel, it is barely a 3 star. I believe we were unfairly miss sold on that hotel. I have emailed them and complaint and was basically fobbed off. Don't make the same mistake as we did. Collapse
