had a great break, very lucky with the weather considering still early in the season. position of the hotel was excellent for getting around, close to beach & marina. we had a hire car so bought a map & went off exploring quite a few local towns, the old part of Faro, Tavira, Silves & the lighthouse @ Cape St Vincent are all worth a visit, especially if you want some great pics to remind you of your trip. Lots of bars & restaurants to choose from in the marina @ varying costs, something for everyone. Collapse

Stayed at the Vila Gale Ampalius with 40+ golfers from 8th January for 7 nights. Stayed on the 6th floor with fantastic sea views. ( room 632 ) Safe was included and there was a fridge available free of charge. The hotel beside the golfers was very quiet, but the staff were all very friendly. Breakfast buffet was good and there was no problem making our lunch/ sandwich etc to eat during golf ( some hotels do not let you take food out of the restaurant ) Hotel was spotlessly clean, and in a great location for the Marina and bars & restaurants in Vilamoura. And the beachside location is brilliant. Check in & out was quick and easy. Lots of car parking space. The outdoor pool was being repaired but this time of the year - was not a problem. Would be excellent hotel for a family holiday but I guess the room I had will have a big supplement in high season. Collapse
Vilamoura’s not really a Xmas destination but we loved it here, and not a golfer in sight!

We stayed for 5 nights over Xmas in one of the huge junior suites which, as we explained in our previous review, are the 6 rooms on each floor directly above the hotel entrance going towards the sea. There are lots of descriptions of these rooms in other reviews so we won’t repeat things, apart from saying we thought the firm beds were great, the large sofa bed in the lounge area was much better to sit on than most we’ve had in hotel rooms or apartments that we’ve stayed in, and the exceptionally hot water was fantastic for having a bath. We wouldn’t recommend these rooms in high season because they face the glass domes of Purobeach Beach Club right by the roundabout opposite, which we understand pumps out masses of noise into the early hours between June and August. When we arrived a few days before Xmas it was exceptionally quiet in the hotel and although more people arrived daily, it was still pretty quiet on Boxing Day when we left. It’s definitely not like going to the Canaries at Xmas where every place is bursting at the seams despite the inflated prices. We’re told it gets somewhat busier for New Year. Because the place was so quiet they closed off floors 6 upwards and we saw painters at work right up to Xmas Eve. And because it was so quiet they didn’t offer a dinner buffet in the days before Xmas. If you booked half board you could choose what you liked from the a la carte menu – and it was good restaurant standard food too, so much better than the usual hotel buffet food. But the hotel did then offer buffet dinners on Xmas Eve and Xmas Day priced at €35pp and even if you’re only staying here B&B, you might want to eat in those days, because there’s next to no choice to eat out in Vilamoura at Xmas because the majority of places are closed. The only restaurant around the marina that was definitely open every day including Xmas Day was Old Navy. In the Canaries, the hotels make out like they’re giving you some sort of really special gala meal for Xmas but truthfully, apart from all the shellfish they offer as starters if you like that sort of thing and we don’t, in our experience, the main courses are often rubbish, well ours have been for the past few years. We were so pleased to see that the Ampalius didn’t really try and do a similar thing. It was a fairly normal buffet for the relatively few guests that were eating in and as a result it was so much better food than we’ve had at Xmas for a number of years. They didn’t bother cooking turkeys Xmas Eve – they offered the little turkey breast steaks that get griddled on request and they were really tender with a nice sauce on the side. And unlike the Canaries, there was actually a reasonable choice of potatoes and veg to make up a proper meal. On Xmas Day we made a bad choice, the roast lamb was like leather, but we could have ditched that and gone for something else if we could have been bothered to do so as, after all, it was a buffet. Vila Gale own their own vineyards in the Alentejo – their Santa Vitoria wines are excellent and not expensive either, and their cheapest own brand red, white & rose house wines were only €9.50 – in a 4 star hotel. Great value. But the cost of hiring the in room safe at €2.50 a day is a bit much we think. Being a working town, in the run up to Xmas it was definitely busier over in Quarteira, but we suspect most if not all places there would have closed up too as we understand the locals tend to spend the holiday indoors with family. It was certainly quieter on Xmas Eve than it had been a day or two earlier. We think we were particularly lucky this year as the weather was so good – 5 days of wall to wall sunshine peaking at about 19C every day, but with a cool wind from the east. It was great to see all that sun and with shelter from the wind on our balcony it was beautifully warm – we’ll upload a couple of Xmas Day pictures. Vilamoura definitely isn’t geared up as a Xmas destination, but we loved what we got at the Ampalius and will be back again for Xmas 2017. Just don’t come here if you want a lively busy time with lots of things to do and lots of entertainment because you’ll probably be very disappointed. Collapse

We stayed at Hotel Vila gale Ampalius from December 29 / 2016 to 5th January 2017, in a Senior Suite . As our departing flight was 20.45 ,our son requested whether his parents could have a late check out till 3 PM and the gentleman at the reception was very understanding and agreed. We were very impressed by his kind gesture. But on 5th morning the lady at the reception said , we have to check out at 2pm or else we have to pay 30 Euros. This is the same lady who said we could stay only till 1 PM .We were very disappointed as the Hotel was virtually empty. What the staff should understand is that little things can make a very good impression on the customer. Further when we went to check the weight of the bags, we were asked to pay 1 Euro per bag. Most of the Hotels do not charge these little things. Unfortunately our entire impression about the Hotel changed as it was very depressing , due attitude of certain staff. Collapse

Nightmare Holiday from HELL!! A Building Site Holiday...Firstly we could not understand why the hotel was so empty to start with? Basically it was ourselves plus one other couple for evening meal in the restraint for three nights and only ourselves during lunch, somewhat strange it seemed.. We stayed here the last week in November 2016. Apparently we have now been informed that the hotel failed to inform our travel agent of major building works being carried out during our stay, the whole of the upper sixth floor was being renovated, right above our room. Somehow we injured the noise for three days starting early morning to late afternoon with constant banging and power tools being used. After we could take no more and making a complaint to the manger they offered us a room three floors down from the building works only to hear the same building noise about the same noise level vibrating throughout the hotel it could even be heard outside on the other side of the road it was that bad! Disgusted to say the least that we had not been advised of this work taking place either by the hotel nor agent jet 2 especially when the booking was only one week prior arriving at the hotel.. Yes thankfully the hotel offered to move us to another sister hotel very near, the hotel Villa Gale Marina only to find a similar thing the next day building works being carried out throughout the hotel that could be heard right through the hotel and down into the lounge etc. Needless to say the agent Jet2 got involved after contacting them and eventually with some hassle they moved us to yet another hotel, three hotels over seven days and four of them pure hell.. My tip is don’t go to either one especially near the end or possibly even the beginning of the season ... Collapse
