Clean, comfy, convenient!

First time here, and it was all very easy. Warm, friendly staff. Clean rooms; they brought extra pillows just seconds after I commented on their check-in questionnaire! I'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

Do not be fooled - this is not Times Square

West 35th Street is to Times Square what Waterloo Station is to Trafalgar Square. If someone says Times Square you are fairly entitled to think of the glitz and glamour of NYC: The M&M Store, Neon Lights, The Naked Cowboy etc. W 35 is 20 minutes walk from there - if you walk fast - and any flashing lights are more likely to be coming from the police station next door. The street is dirty and grubby and well away from the glitz and the glamour. Times Square is 7th avenue down to perhaps 42nd street - this is 35th street and almost as far across as 9th avenue (and we saw very few obvious tourists walking on 9th). And if you are thinking luxury hotel then think again. It is clean and tidy inside (well, perhaps excluding the gents restroom in the lobby which was not the highlight of my trip) but think somewhere between Travelodge and Premier Inn. The 6am alarm call was not great and not by choice. There is major building work in the area and the machinery kicks in at 6am; 7.15 on the Saturday. But the room was clean and kept clean the staff were friendly (especially the cleaners) reception got us into our room early without an extra charge and being a long way from where we expected meant we explored more and ended up having a more interesting trip than expected (used the subway, visited Madison square garden, ate at diners on 9th avenue, papaya hotdog shop on 8th, etc). However, if we had known where this hotel was in relation to Times Square we would never have gone there - and would certainly never go back. Perhaps a 3 (or even a 4) star review if that location issue was not so misleading. Collapse

This modern hotel has been thoroughly updated. It is two blocks to Madison Square Garden. Our room was very clean with nice sized windows. The lobby has a bar and a small restaurant for all meals. There are also plenty of restaurants within a block of the hotel. A 4 block walk to the Highline The only drawback is the noise from construction on the building across the street. And they start early! But, hey, its NYC and a little noise has to be expected. Collapse

My family of 5 stayed in the family room from 16 Dec-19 Dec 2017. Our room was large enough for 2 adults and 3 kids (aged 14, 12 & 7). The subway station was close by and we had no problems with the accommodation. We liked the fact we were not right in the middle of Times Square as it's a mad house in that area. However, things went wrong when we checked out of the hotel. It has taken me this long to write the review as I have been waiting for some feedback from the hotel management but I feel like I have been strung along. After NY we were taking the train from Penn Station (walking distance from hotel) to Washington DC. When we boarded the train about 2 hours after we checked out, I realized we had left our passports and my jewellery pouch which contained my diamond wedding band (which needed resizing), a pair of sapphire diamond earrings and a few other not so expensive items.. My teen daughter had taken the items out from the safe and had forgotten them on the floor in front of the safe. I quickly called the hotel from the train to explain what we had left. The person I spoke to said yes, we had all your items. I clearly said several times 2 items were left behind a pouch with passports and one with jewellery. I was assured the items were found. I then asked them to send the items to our hotel in DC. When the items arrived, only the passport pouch was in the Fedex envelope. Of course this led to a call with the hotel and I was finally transferred to the Director of Operations, Mike Martini. He was very helpful at the time and told me to email the details of what happened and list the items in the pouch. He would then forward it to their insurance company. I had begged him to please find my items since I wanted my wedding band back. He said he has checked with staff and the items could not be found. From Dec until now, I have not received any communication from Mike. I have sent many, many emails inquiring a claim number or any info relating to the insurance claim, without any response. I managed to call and get Mike Martini on the phone in Feb and he said he would call me back with details but no details ever came. I do realize our carelessness led to this position. However, things like this do happen at hotels. I have stayed in many hotels around the world and all have trustworthy employees. I am shocked that this hotel is not more concerned that someone on their staff is a thief. I am also disappointed that the Director of Operations has such poor customer service that emails from a guest is ignored. PLEASE BE CAREFUL WITH VALUABLES IN THIS HOTEL. Collapse
