I feel the need to exploit those that make decisions based on their 'terms and conditions of booking', instead of making a 'human' decision that affects another in their time of need. The laughable excuse of transferring our booking to anther date is certainly something I will never entertain with this hotel, if it was the last place on earth. Disappointed with a human beings decision to quite obviously focus on bagging money from well-natured visitors. I have many friends working in the industry who have advised this is quite simply one of the worst experiences they have heard. Don't risk it. Get a better place who will treat you with dignity. Really disappointed with this hotel. The location is perfect but the glossy professional photos are selling a lie. We booked our one night stay the Tophams via Booking.com based on the great location – it’s very close to Victoria station and we were in London to see Wicked, so the hotel was perfectly placed for us. The photos also looked fantastic so we thought we’d stumbled across a little hidden gem. As mentioned, the hotel is just a few minutes from Victoria and from the outside the building is stunning. The reception area was very basic, one table and a fairly basic checking in system, luggage tags were simple, hand written stickers with just the date written on them. We checked in easily and made our way to the second floor – the lift was out of order so we lugged our bags up a couple of flights of stairs. Again, walking through the hotel the décor was fine although I noticed a few dents, scratches and tears along the way. We had to walk through the bar area which is a small section of hallway – lots of empty boxes stacked in the corner and mix and match of glassware on display. The room itself was quite tight but on first glance looked nice. As we settled in though, the cracks started to show. Most of the furniture was a little battered, the TV only really worked if you stuck to BBC 1 and the complimentary drinks box was half stocked. The bathroom was let down. Loose floor tiles, broken tile behind the shaving point so there was an exposed hole in the wall and the shower door didn’t close properly. The mattress was truly awful. It's obviously very old and worn down, it was like a marshmallow but not in the nice, fall in to the lovely bed sort of way. More like no springs or support! I really struggled to sleep and we both had terrible backs the following day. When we returned from our evening we decided to have a drink in the bar – what a disaster! There was a very random selection of spirits displayed, what can only be described as the back of your Nan’s old drinks cabinet (think Pernod!). They had one bottle of cider of display – we assumed there would be more in the fridge but sadly they only had that one, dusty, warm bottle. My partner decided to go for only to be told we’d have to wait for ice. I ended up settling for a vodka and coke, again no ice. There didn’t seem to be much of a price list – on first enquiry the cider was £2.95, then it was £4.95, I still have no idea what the cost of anything actually was!. It was all very strange. The following day we checked out, again with ease and left. On returning home I realised I’d left a pair of boots in the room and called to track them down. I had to call back three times because the story changed from we don’t have them, I'll ask the housekeeper to check again, until I mentioned I’d be reporting them as stolen if they couldn’t track them down!...Then they turned up. Whilst I appreciate it was my own fault for leaving my belongings, there was no attempt whatsoever to try and help me to retrieve the boots. No offer to get them back to me etc. In fact, the woman on the phone was quite abrupt in wanting to know when I was picking them up. I had to explain I don't live in London and would need to make arrangements. Again, she was quite abruptly asking me when I was coming to get them. I managed to get a friend to pick them up but there was no attempt to demonstrate any kind of goo customer service. Surely I can't be the only person to have left something behind?! All in all I’d say this hotel needs a lot of work. It’s in a prime location and could be a fantastic hotel with some investment. The décor needs updating and they really need to sort out the bar! Either stock it adequately or just don’t have one at all. I can't comment on the food as we didn't eat there apart from a tea and coffee from the under-stocked box in our room...two guests need more than one packed of biscuits! As we booked with Booking.com we saved a lot of money (thank God) as I would never have paid full price for this room. I noticed on checking in the rooms for the same night were £400+ in comparison to our £86. There is no way the room was worth anywhere near £400! Maybe if/when its refurbished but not in its current condition. I’d be furious if I was paying that sort of price and that was the room I got. Collapse

When we first arrived at the hotel, there was nobody at reception. When a member of staff did show up to check us in, it was an awfully slow process due to the fact they still have the paper check in documents rather than a computer check in. The room really wasn't bad but there were some notable issues with it: 1) most of the furniture was scuffed badly. 2) the room was really cold. We seemingly only had an option for cold A/C rather than heat. 3) the springs in the bed were absolutely all over the place and broken. You could feel every single spring in that bed and I'm technically underweight! Seems like they haven't purchased new beds since the place started... 4) shower was a bit limescaley and grimy, with the shower head itself being cheap and cheerful. 5) there is no way in hell this hotel is four stars. The size of the room was good and the size of the bathroom was better than expected. It wasn't awful but I wouldn't stay here again in a hurry. Collapse

The Victoria station is nearby, as is Ian Flemming's old abode, a little convenient store, and a few small restaurants. We didn't eat there, but enjoyed their coffee station within the room. We had to climb many narrow stairs to get to our old room that must have been staffing quarters long ago. It's in a clean, nice part of town. I would stay there again. The staff was very nice, though we didn't need much. Collapse
