We stayed at Thornbury Castle in December (a Sunday night), the signage for the castle could have been better, but once we found it, we were not disappointed. Reception were very helpful, at 3pm someone showed us to our room (Bedford - deluxe chamber) and our first reaction when we saw the room (more like a suite) was Wow ! It has a four poster bed two, two seater suits, a grand fire place, the usual coffee/tea/water and mini fridge. A castle style doorway (duck if you are taller than 5 ft !) leading into a small clockroom and then into a large bathroom, where there were bathrobes and slippers. The only negative comment (if I had to make one) was the bathroom could do with a lick of paint and floor tiles replacing.....but overall if I could give 10 stars I would. We had an evening meal booked at pm, we were asked to arrive 15 minutes before our table booking where we ordered drinks and were asked to wait in the lounge (amazing room) and we were given hors d'oeuvres 'on the house' which were lovely. The food and service was excellent, great quality and delicious. The service was excellent, very attentive, but not intrusive, our waiter Petro was very polite/professional and made the experience even more pleasurable. All I can say is i would stay here again in a heart beat. Collapse

I really enjoyed my stay in the castle, you can really feel the history around you and the building is lovely and so atmospheric. We stayed in the Portlethan Suite which is gorgeous (you even get a giant antique looking key to lock the door with!). Relaxed in the lounge which was all decorated for Christmas, received complimentary canapés before our three course meal in the cosy restaurant with brilliant service from Pedro our waiter. Megan the receptionist was also lovely and very helpful and courteous. In fact all the staff were great and helped to make our trip a special one. I would not hesitate to go back! Collapse

Alternative title for this review: Downton Crappy. My husband bought a package on Secret Escapes for 1 night + 2 course meal + breakfast at Thornbury Castle, and we stayed the night of December 16, 2017. The pros: If you’re looking to spend a night for purely the atmosphere of an old castle but with modern conveniences, this is the place for you. Our room was private, spacious and beautiful. The bed could be bigger but that’s a minor nitpick. The other common spaces in the castle – the lounge and restaurants – are also well-decorated and, despite the expansive space, still felt very cosy. Service at reception was also good – the staff do their best to accommodate requests promptly (though when something costs extra, don’t offer it to us like a freebie and then charge us for it later – like having a newspaper delivered!). The cons: The biggest gripes I have are with the lounge and restaurant – both the service and the food are terrible. We had lunch in the lounge and dinner at the restaurant, the latter of which is supposed to be an especially luxurious experience. Alas, this was not to be for us. The service in the lounge and the restaurants were some of the worst I’ve ever experienced. There are plenty of waitstaff and they’re all very friendly, but good luck getting anyone to take your order. Once your order is finally taken, don’t expect to see the same server with any regularity – there were so many people who stopped by our table (at lunch in the lounge and at dinner in the restaurant) that it was difficult to keep track of who we had directed questions or requests to. You could also tell the more experienced servers were exasperated with the older/slower or less experienced staff – understandable, but I don’t want to witness that when I’m trying to have a relaxing evening. Most of the servers we encountered were also not fluent in English and had a hard time understanding us. The food in the restaurant was mediocre to inedible -- unacceptable for the cost. My husband and I had arranged for a 2-course meal, though we (unfortunately, as it turns out) upgraded to 3 courses. We enjoyed the canapes in the lounge, but the dinner itself was not good. While my starter (risotto) was totally bland, my husband’s starter (oxtail soup) was too salty. I was warned that the chef served my requested main – beef – medium rare, which is my preferred done-ness, but it came to me almost raw. The waitstaff graciously brought me a new plate with a better-cooked piece of meat, but the swede served with it was underdone and inedible (and while they took my husband’s plate to keep it warm while we waited for another serving, they did not take our sides but left us with no plates – so those got cold while we waited). My dessert – chocolate brownie – was drowning in chocolate sauce and was far too salty. My husband also had to wait 10 minutes for a refill on his drink. We couldn’t wait to wrap up the meal and get back to our nice room, but it took AGES to get the bill. Breakfast was also disappointing. The cold buffet was rarely replenished (where were all the pastries???) and the meals we ordered – Full Englishes – were small and served lukewarm. We ordered our eggs fried, but they came undercooked. I just wanted to leave by that point, so I didn’t bother sending it back. The final con we experienced was with our taxi ride back to the train station, which was arranged by the front desk. The company they hired the taxi from was called South Glos. The driver was late, and despite there being No Smoking signs plastered all over the car, the entire van and the driver smelled like an ashtray. It was disgusting – and the chesty coughs of the driver didn’t help the ambiance. If we hadn’t already been running late, we would have cancelled the taxi and just booked an Uber. With the Secret Escapes special plus the extras (like adding an extra course at dinner), we ended up spending around 330 GBP for one night. Totally not worth the cost. I’d hate to think what we would’ve spent without the Secret Escapes deal. So, if you’re looking for a lovely (if pricey) place to rest your head for a night or two while visiting Bristol, Thornbury Castle might work for you. But I’d highly recommend finding somewhere else to dine and organizing your own transportation! We will not be returning. Collapse

Lovely, authentic castle hotel where Henry VII and Anne Bolyen statyed for their honeymoon. Walk in their history. Sat where they sat. All rooms are lovely, our favourite was 'Mary'. Afternoon tea was delightful and dinner charming and well presented. One comment would be the vegtables were too underdone, virtually uncooked. Easily fixed. Dinner could use an upgrade for the money. The atmosphere is magical. All staff were charming and helpful. Please bring the dinner up to the a finer level to match the wonderful venue. I'm sure it will be perfect by the time you get there. Collapse
