There is no need to take a taxi to Oslo if you are arriving att Oslo Gardemoen Airport just follow the signs for Flytoget (Airport Express Train). If you are an adult that pays the full fare (190 NOK single fare) you go straight to the entrance gates and draw your credit card to enter. If you are senior you pay half price and need to go to the ticket machines to get yourticket, which you scan at the entrance. (When returning to the airport you need to draw your card/scan your ticket to enter the airport building.) Flytoget runs every 10th minute and will take you to Oslo S (Oslo Central Station) in 22 minutes. If your train continues beyond Oslo you will alight the train at the north side of the station but if it ends at Oslo S you get off at the station’s south side. (When leaving for the airport the train always goes from the south side.) To get to Thon Hotel Munch it is easiest if walk over to the north side by turning right just after you coming into the station building and take the escalator up into the wide corridor that brings you over to the north side. There you’ll find a Seven Eleven where you can buy tickets for the local transport (trams, buses and underground). A prepaid single ticket costs 35NOK/18 NOK for adult/senior and a 24 hour ticket 105 NOK/53 NOK. Until April 2018 maintenance work is done so the tram towards the hotel has been changed to bus. Find out more on the website of Ruter (the local transport system). Take the escalator down at the north side and pass the taxis on the way out, turn left into the street, Biskop Gunnerus gate, cross straight over Fred Olsens Gate and follow the tram tracks for 850 meters up the hill passing the cathedral on your left. Follow the tram line along Grensen until a triangular square (C. J. Hambros Plass) opens up in front of you, take right into Apotekargata, the first left into Munchs gate and pass by the guard hut on the right and the parking house on the left. At the next crossing you’ll see Thon Hotel Munch with its entrance in Bernhard Getz’ gate . This walk is 1 100 meters and would take about 15 minutes. When entering Thon Hotel Munch in the first floor the reception is at one side of a quite spacious hall with seating and a computer with printer for guests. The breakfast room is situated in second floor on the other side of the building with one whole side of windows looking out on Munchs gate and is really spacious with another room at the end. I have stayed quite a number of times and I keep coming back. I like the quiet location that is close to the main shopping street Karl Johan. Close by there are museums, theatres and restaurants (one Chinese in the hotel building). This time I got a room at the very end of the hotel corridor and the only one facing the inner yard. The room was a bit chilly but I opened the thick curtains hiding the radiator and its thermostat so it soon warmed up. When going to bed I made sure that the thermostat was out in the open air and not behind the curtain. There was a lamp at the writing table and sockets for the water boiler and my laptop, tea bags and instant coffee and beside a luggage rack for my suitcase. The Wi-Fi worked fine. The bathroom was equipped with hair drier, a comfortably heated floor and was brightly lit. The room and bath was spotlessly clean. The breakfast at Hotel Munch is amassing. It has got everything. There was a pile of loaves to cut slices from and a lot of fresh fruit bananas, oranges, tangerines and melons. You will also find fresh vegetables, pates, salmon, hams, sausages and cheeses. The hot stuff was scrambled eggs, chorizo, meat balls, bacon and beans. Sorry, I forgot to bring my camera to the breakfast this time but there are quite a few in my review from February 2017. One lady could not find porridge but it came in a bag so you could make it yourself by adding hot water, I enjoyed staying at Thon Hotel Munch for the good and friendly service provided and the excellent breakfast. I urge you to come here. I will return. . Collapse

I like this hotel a lot. I’ll tell you why. Firstly, they have the best breakfast spread so far. Hot meals, cold cuts, breads, fruits and fresh vegetables for salad. The amazing and scrumptious spread made me looked forward to breakfast every morning. If breakfast is quite a normal service to you, how about a hotel providing soup for its guests in the evening? I felt that was thoughtful. The first night, it was cannelloni beans, and the next day it was minestrone soup. On top of that, there is free flow of Nespresso coffee and Twinning teabags on the ground floor. The room temperature was perfect with the heater turned on all day. The bed and pillows were comfortable, I slept so well. The checkin and checkout were a breeze. I even received a text to check in and got my room number a day before I arrived. I thought that was something special. The service was impeccable, the staff were smiling always and very helpful. I’ll definitely recommend this hotel to my friends. Collapse

Saturday night stay in late January 2018. 8th floor room facing Munch’s Gate. The Thon Hotel Munch delivers exactly what it says on the tin - a clean, mid-range hotel conveniently located in a quiet neighbourhood, within walking distance of most tourist spots and public transport. The rooms look like they’ve been recently refurbished (in cheerful, bright colours). Staff members are polite and helpful – check-in and check-out were a breeze, and every interaction with reception staff was nice. My booking included free buffet breakfast, which is available until 11am on weekends. The spread was vast, and the quality good. I seem to have caught peak breakfast traffic just after 10am. However, despite both the breakfast “halls” being full, staff was constantly replenishing food, drinks, cutlery & crockery, and clearing the tables. Kudos to the breakfast staff, because none of the food dishes were empty at any point during the 45 minutes I was there. Other random notes: • Free coffee is available from a Nespresso machine placed between reception & the lifts. • A complimentary umbrella is available in the room for use during your stay, which I thought was a nice touch. • Free WiFi is available throughout the hotel. • Note that there aren’t any good restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the hotel, although there is a Chinese restaurant adjoining it. • Water pressure and temperature in the shower, and availability of hot water even in the morning was great. • Tip: press and hold the shampoo/body wash dispenser, instead of pumping! Overall, great value for money in an expensive city. I’d definitely stay here again. Collapse
