The Talbot is full of old world charm yet provided bedroom accommodation which will suit all - my 82 year mother had an accessible room whilst my husband and I had a characterful one in the old part, After I had proved to the staff that we had paid in advance for 2 rooms they were apologetic about informing us that they only had one available and offered us complimentary drinks. Whilst the breakfast was disappointing (with the exception of the porridge) the evening meal was excellent. Collapse

We booked the hotel as we needed accommodation for attending a nearby birthday party, in summary we found: Hotel understaffed as on three occasions had to search for staff to deal with a lack of towels, no hairdryer in room and trying to order food in the bar, food when it came was very good. Cleanliness of the room was very poor, very dusty and the bathroom floor hadn't been washed in weeks as when we ran a tissue over the surface, was covered in fluff and pubic hairs from previous guests! A very disgusting looking shower curtain as well! The rooms in the front of the hotel were very noisy with traffic passing late into the night, take ear plugs! The breakfast was extra cost and was very poor, no fruit except for melon, self serve buffet with congealed scrambled egg, beans, mushrooms, bacon , sausages and tomatoes under silver domes, kept warm with heater underneath, really not appetising at all. All in all very disappointing, we paid £84.00 on a room only basis with breakfast charged at £15.00 each Collapse
Great staff, skimpy provisions

Stayed here for one night in a double room for a family wedding. All of the staff were friendly, welcoming and worked hard. The MC for all the wedding arrangements was excellent - great organisation, always smiling even after a late night and back on duty at breakfast. He kept everyone on their toes and organised. The bar staff not quite so great, service slow and they did not know of some drinks - e.g. Campari and soda! The wedding in general and the meal overall were excellent, just a few gaps in the food - one part of the main dish not served and some elements of the vegetarian dish not added. The vegan chocolate mousse was apparently inedible but the duck pate, beef and Eton Mess were superb. The room was clean and comfortable but sparse. No room information except for a fire instruction sheet so no idea about breakfast, when or where. Only one bath towel for two people, no teaspoon and just 4 little milk pots for two people. Of course we could have asked for more and my brother went to reception and got some fresh milk - but we were in a new annexe at the back - very good for being quiet but too far to want to trek to reception in the dark for milk. There was a phone in the room but no instructions and many buttons - so maybe there was room service but I didn't try it - more information would have been helpful. My brother's room in the main part of the hotel was opposite the wedding room so noisy until the early hours. The annexe was very quiet - no staff there, just access by electronic keys. The wedding room was perfect for the 80 guests at the wedding breakfast but when another 45 turned up for the evening not everyone could get into the room! Quite a few of us retired to the bar to chat - which actually worked well for those who wanted a quieter corner - but I would have liked to have spent some time on the dance floor if I could have got in! The breakfast was, again, on the whole very good. A wide selection of hot and cold food, nice pastries, good quality bread and choice of juices etc. Negatives were the coffee which was quite weak and cold plates to put the hot food on. I would give 3.75 stars if I could. Like other reviews - some parts were wonderful - others not so good. 3 stars for the room provisions and bar staff 4 starts for the food 5 stars to the MC and waiting on staff. Collapse

Afternoon tea at the Talbot Inn in Ripley was very disappointing today. The scones were very dry and hard, like rock cakes and the other cakes were dry and lacking in flavour. The atmosphere and setting were very nice but the service was not very attentive at all and we weren't asked once if everything was ok. Overall this was not very good value for money and it has put us off returning again for dinner. Collapse
Wonderful on the whole . . . . . . but a few negatives.

Fabulous building, wonderful refurbishment and delightful staff - but I think some of the latter have/had been thrown in at the deep end. Confusion over bar prices etc. (Not cheap bar prices at the best of times!) Restaurant serves the most amazing food - but be prepared to wait! Four of us ordered starters and mains. Starters arrived very promptly but main courses came well over 30 mins later. Neighbouring tables who only ordered main courses . . . . . . . and arrived and ordered WAY after us . . . . . . . . had their food in to time at all. Just because you have a starter doesn't mean you have to wait an eternity for your main course, surely?! Slight niggles with bedrooms in main building too - no tissues, shower caps etc. And rooms are SO hot! (Etc, etc.) Moaning, yes - but this place has a certain charm! Hard one to review. Probably better staying in the modern rooms at the back of hotel. Collapse
