I visited this restaurant with my wife using the promotion of Sunderland Restaurant's Week looking for a Sunday Lunch in a pleasant place. The food was nice (as expected for being in Marriott): big portions, tasty and well presented. However, the service was not even closer to the company's standards. There were just 2 waiters for all the restaurant (actually, it could be say that they counted as 1 because there were an old lady and a young guy and I don't know who worth less): there were 3 tables that were not cleared after clients; we were sit without a drink menu, once ordered them, the starters came before the drinks and they served us a glass of tap water from a jug that was left on another table by the previous customers. The guy was kind and polite but the old lady was extremely serious she didn't smile or make us feel warm any time. To sum up, we are dissatisfied with Sunderland Marriott Restaurant. Collapse

I had booked a standard room but they upgraded me to a suite which was excellent. it is an old hotel and room numbering system can be a bit confusing. Excellent breakfast in the restaurant with great views. Hotel doesn't have much of a lounge area. Free parking. Overall, great value for money. Collapse

Stayed here on a 2 night weekday business visit. The hotel was surpisingly very busy for mid- March and can agree with other comments about potential parking issues - though we had none. Internally the hotel looks every bit of its 4 start rating. My room whilst not that big, was spotlessly clean and had everthing I needed. There was no air-con in mine which wasn't a big deal for the time of year, but could be another issue in the height of summer, especially with having the annoying hotel window scenario so common these days where they're restricted to about an inch of opening. A colleague had a room in another part of the hotel that did have air-con, so I'm not sure whether it's hit and miss whether you'll get it or whether you have to request it. Breakfast was buffet style (continental and English) - with the eggs to order. One thing I must mention is the wonderful staff in the breakfast area - they're a credit to the hotel; friendly, smiley and full of enthusiasm. I can't comment on the pool/spa faclilites as I didn't use them, but I did look in on them and they looked very good. Overall a great stay. Would happily return on a leisure trip and stay again. Toilet in our room was right next to wall, luckily i'm not that big but i could imagine bigger ladies or gentleman would struggle with this. Cost £107 for 1 night 2 people. Collapse

I have been visiting Sunderland, in particular Seaburn beach for years and have always seen the beautiful Marriott Hotel and wanted to stay there. As a surprise for my 50th Birthday I had two nights with my lovely other half who had booked and asked for a sea view knowing that the North East coastline is my absolute favourite. I was over the moon to find out this is where I was going and I can honestly say all my dreams of how lovely it would be were exceeded. Firstly we checked in and I was wished a Happy Birthday and given some drinks vouchers which was unexpected and a lovely touch. We went to our room, the beautiful room 110 with the most stunning seaview. A short while after getting to the room, just enough time to unpack and not be intrusive there was a knock at the door and a lovely lady fetched a plate of fresh fruit and a bottle of cold water wishing me a Happy Birthday as she fetched it. It was very welcome and we sat and ate it just looking at the view. The room was really lovely with a bed facing the window which perfectly framed the sea. The bed had plenty of pillows and was very comfy. We both slept very well the two nights we stayed. There was a chest of drawers and a proper wardrobe in the room that had ample space for belongings. The wardrobe came equipped with plenty of coat hangers - real ones that are easy to use as oppose to those fiddly ones many hotels use. It held an ironing board and an iron that for a hotel iron did a decent job! There was also a full size powerful hairdryer tucked away in there. There was a decent sized desk/dressing table with a good mirror. There were two comfy armchairs by the window with a decent sized table between. This held an ice bucket (ice machine was just down the hallway) two wine glasses and a corkscrew which I thought was a nice touch. The refreshments tray was well stocked. Everything was spotlessly clean. The bathroom had a large bath and a separate walk in shower and was well stocked with toiletries that smelt wonderful. We ate in the restaurant the first evening. Again I was wished a Happy Birthday from all members of staff who were so attentive. The food was wonderful, very tasty and well presented. The menu isn't massive so we weren't outfaced with choice but there was something on there for everyone. We ordered dessert but before it came out yet another Birthday surprise was presented to me, this time a beautiful tray of dessert with Happy Birthday written on. As we were eating that two bottles of Prosecco were fetched out for my Birthday each holding two glasses. I honestly expected none of this, it was all little extras that weren't charged for and I can honestly say they made the stay a real celebration. As we went back to our room the lady on reception wished me a Happy Birthday. It was perfect and the memory of everything the hotel did will stay with me. Breakfast the following morning was delicious. The restaurant is along the front of the hotel so has a sea view. Staff were lovely and efficient and we left the restaurant full and went for a walk along the sea front before returning to use the pool. The pool was just as lovely as the rest of the hotel. A good temperature, not too busy and very relaxing. The spa is lovely and warm and we spent some time relaxing in there. We didn't try the sauna or steam room as we were happy with the pool and spa but will probably try those on future stays. Housekeeping came to our room just as we returned, she offered to come back later but we were fine with her being there while we sat reading. My partner is waiting for a knee replacement and she noticed he was in pain with his knee, he told her he was waiting for a replacement and still recovering from his latest surgery. The following day he saw her in the hallway just before we left and she enquired after his knee and hoped he was in less pain. Such a lovely thing and we were both very impressed that of all the people she must see she remembered that small detail about him. Little things that make guests feel so important. Our second night we ate in the bar. Again really lovely food and still the same excellent service. It was a very relaxed atmosphere in there and we sat for a while enjoying the atmosphere. The gentleman from the restaurant the evening before recognised us and came over to speak to us, again another lovely touch that made us feel we mattered. The staff at breakfast on the second morning were just as lovely and on this morning although we had full English we took the time to see what else was on offer. There was a wide and varied choice, again something for everyone. I honestly didn't want to leave and we will most definitely be back at this hotel in the future. I can't praise it highly enough. It would be very easy to say we got that level of care and service because it was my birthday but I don't believe this is the case. On our first morning at breakfast there was a lady eating alone who started to talk to the staff about where she lived and her life. It was clear she had stayed at the hotel more than one night as more than once she asked them "have I told you this before?" and they just nodded discreetly and allowed her to continue to tell her story. Their patience with this lady was commendable. We were incredibly lucky with the weather considering it was early March and the photos added are untouched and used no filters. The sea really is that blue on sunny days and the view from the hotel really is that peaceful and wonderful. The Marriott at Sunderland is beautiful, the setting is stunning and the staff are second to none. Thank you for a wonderful stay. Collapse
