We visited the Spa at Summer Lodge at the weekend, this is set in the grounds of the gorgeous Summer Lodge Country hotel. On arrival we were greeted by Sophie, the assistant Spa Manager, who was very helpful and friendly and showed us all around. I have to say I was a little bit disappointed by the size of the gym, which is absolutely tiny and has only about 4 pieces of equipment and minimal hand weights, the changing rooms are also very small, but as the Spa was quiet this was not a problem, they were well equipped with towels, robes, slippers and toiletries. The actual swimming pool area I thought could be vastly improved with the addition of some plants and maybe coloured pads on the loungers, we both agreed it looked a little stark and could be lovely with a little extra thought, to provide tea/coffee as well as water would also be a nice addition. My husband and I both had facials and massages and both agreed these were wonderful, Sophie and Sophie B were both very friendly and professional and we could not fault them. The highlight to the end of our day was a trip over to the hotel for a cream tea. I have worked in the hotel industry myself for a number of years and am quite well travelled, but I can honestly say I have never found such friendly helpful staff anywhere near as good as the ones at Summer Lodge. The waiter who brought our cream tea was polite and friendly (a tip would be to heat the scones) and then the assistant housekeeper offered to show us a bedroom as we were showing interest in the hotel, a very nice touch. All in all we had a lovely afternoon and will definitely be back to spend a night and have dinner in the hotel in the New Year. Thank you Summer Lodge, you should be very proud of your hotel and especially your staff. Collapse

Went for a pre Christmas treat with 4 other friends. Really friendly and helpful staff. Rooms in the coach house were excellent and had everything needed including very good Wi-fi. Food was very good for almost everything. The one exception was the scrambled egg at breakfast which was dreadful and tasted like cardboard and was probably not made from fresh eggs. However this is a small complaint as the breakfast selection was very good. Excellent selection of drinks, if a bit pricey! Spa was very nice. Shame the pool was so shallow with sloping walls which made swimming lengths very difficult. Also jacuzzi was really hot and difficult to take!! We knew the restaurant was closed one night when we booked, but were surprised to find the lounge also closed. This should not happen when there are residents. Worth a visit. Collapse

This is not our first trip to Summer Lodge, once you have visited you can't wait to go back. We travel with our little dog and he is treated just as importantly as human guests. Don't worry if you do not like dogs, the rooms are in a separate lodge just a very short distance from the main hotel - literally 20 second walk. Our room was beautiful, so clean, you would have never known a dog had stayed there prior to our visit. There are doggy towels, bowls and water and welcome doggy biscuits for your pooch. You are more than welcome to leave your well behaved hound in the room whilst you go and eat in the restaurant, or if you pooch does not like to be left the hotel will set a table for you in the Whiskey Lounge so that you can bring your pooch with you. As you would expect the main restaurant/lounge/spa does not allow dogs, but there are ample gardens and outdoor seating if the weather permits. There are more walks than you and your hound could possibly dream about and there are even wellies provided for humans and dog washing station for muddy paws! The deer park is beautiful as is the surrounding countryside meaning you could easily stay at Summer Lodge and not go out in your car until it's time to go home. If you do venture out Dorchester has four fantastic trails - taking in the history of the town including a roman villa which is free to view. Eating at Summer Lodge is wonderful, there is so much choice at breakfast hot and cold and the restaurant is fantastic. The Acorn in the village serves what I would class as more normal pub food and is dog friendly. It's a lovely pub and the hotel will book your table for you. There is a great room service menu as well which we took advantage of. The spa is fabulous, the pool is just over 10 metres long and set in a glass building, so it feels warm but gives you the feeling of light and space. There is a Jacuzzi and steam room and plenty of sun loungers to relax in your complimentary robe and slippers. The spa staff are great - spent a very lovely hour having a facial and massage - bliss. Nothing is too much trouble at Summer Lodge, if you see the staff in the village or on the complex they greet you with a smile and a good morning/afternoon, room service/housekeeping work incredibly hard making sure you have everything you need. Tea/coffee/chocolate fresh milk, bottled water, shortbread biscuits/fruit as well as REN shower gel/shampoo/conditioner and seriously everything you could possibly need or want from shower caps to cotton buds. There is an whenever/whatever policy in the hotel ensuring that you are always looked after incredibly well. Beautiful rooms, fabulous location, excellent service and one of the best kept secrets of Dorset! Collapse

We last visted 38 years ago when Nigel & Margaret first opened, but we vow to return more frequently. The current proprietors, “The Red Carnation” Hotel Group & the excellent local general managers, the Mackenzies have certainly upheld the superb standards & have made substantial improvement to the facilities, for example they now boast a heated indoor swimming pool & gym complex which we very much appreciated. And the gardens, even in winter, were beautiful & attended to everyday by the dedicated gardening team. And last but certainly not least one has to applaud the establishment on its fine food & attentive & friendly staff. We were cared for absolutely perfectly throughout our stay. Collapse
