Well, after reading all the reviews I was dubious to say the least. However - my experience was really good. We had three courses (I myself had melon, roast turkey with all the trimmings and Christmas pud). The meal followed with tea and coffee. We were then served mince pies as a surprise extra. I however couldn’t eat mine as I was full from the meal. The portion sizes were fair. The staff were super friendly and attentive. Drinks were reasonable for hotel prices. We had a disco which was cheesy and fabulous. We also wound up having the downstairs function room to ourselves. All in all a very positive experience. All for the bargain price of £13.95pp!!! Yeah the decor is kinda retro, but who cares?! It was clean! Give the place a chance. Collapse

We booked our work Xmas party here before reading any reviews. After reading the reviews we weren't expecting it to be any good especially for the price we paid. However we were soon eating our doubts, we had the function room to ourselves with a bar and disco. The food was excellent probably the best Xmas party dinner I've had! It was hot, fresh, tasty and good servings, with coffee and mince pies too for those that could fit a bit more in. The staff were great very efficient and the food was served quickly and no long gaps of waiting between courses. Yes the decor is a little tired but for what we paid it more than exceeded our expectations, we would definitely look at another Xmas party here. Great value . Collapse
I'm trying to be kind but it's difficult when they give you nothing to work with.

Firstly I acknowledge that I'm not expecting much for thirty quid. But minimum standards apply no matter how much you've paid for a budget hotel and this one falls short. Everything is in a poor state of repair. The linen on the bed was clean but I was FREEZING cold in the night and astonished that the heating wasn't on in mid November. I suffer from a dust mite allergy and my asthma and eczema were both exacerbated by the excessive amounts of dust caused by a lack of cleaning. My 'view' was of a brick wall. There was a noise that disturbed me all night that sounded like a tapping sound. The T.V. remote didn't work, the toilet didn't flush and the peephole in the door had been plugged with toilet roll. There are stairs everywhere and the place is like a maze so it's completely unsuitable for anyone with mobility issues. I was deeply alarmed to see the fire regulations were NOT clearly displayed on the rear of the door. I don't believe this even compiles with the law? Positives? Actually there are some. The breakfast was excellent. Coffee was great, they provided soya and the service was courteous and prompt. Food was very good and lots of choice. The bed was comfortable and the sheets clean. This is a seafront hotel so it's well placed for trade but it's up against hotels with similar price points that are MUCH better. Collapse

Plus points - seafront location close to the pier, surprisingly good (cheap) breakfast, friendly restaurant staff. Minus points - pretty much everything else. Room was dated and tatty, the bathroom window didn't close properly, there was what sounded like a tap running all night (thank goodness I always travel with ear plugs!), the room smelt like someone had been smoking in there and the piece de resistance - the bed and bedding. Two wafer thin pillows and an equally thin 'duvet' that was barely big enough to cover the bed. The bed creaked ominously every time I moved and had probably the most uncomfortable mattress I've slept on in a long time. Just what you need when you have a shoulder injury! I've stayed in numerous hotels in Eastbourne, most of which don't charge a great deal more but are infinitely better. The hotel definitely needs an update! Collapse

For the first time in a long time I needed to find a hotel for a work related trip. I needed to spend a Monday in Eastbourne so decided it made sense to go down the evening before rather than face a very early start and risk a battle with commuter traffic. I looked on plenty of sites and read countless reviews (I read as well as write them) and The Strand seemed to fit the bill and purpose. I just needed somewhere inexpensive, central and clean. To be fair it was all three and I have no significant complaints, especially for just £40 for a double room for a night. However, as reasonable as a room might be somethings should still be expected to be right & if their not it’s perfectly reasonable to say so. It was a very cold evening & the room was not hot, nor warm even. It was bordering on chilly which was not great. The room was clean but it has to have been the smallest room I’ve stayed in which didn’t matter too much but worth noting as it would have been very noticeable had there been two of us. Lastly the shower. It was ensure (great), clean (excellent) and bright (perfect). However, the water never got hotter than cold which was really unpleasant especially when combined with the barely warm room temperature. I had no choice but to have a cold shower as I needed to get going but had I not I would have called down to reception to complain. As it was I showered and it was only when I was drying off that I realised the water was starting to warm up!! Annoying! I didn’t realise I needed to let it run for 10 minutes before using it. Overall it was good value for £40. It’s right on the sea front which was lovely and, now I know about the shower, I reckon I’d stay again. Collapse
