I booked 3 rooms here for my wife and I and her two sisters, one of whom is disabled and the other also has mobility problems. I checked if they had accessible rooms and when I booked I asked for the rooms to be near together, and either ground floor or near a lift. When we arrived we had all been allocated rooms on the 3rd floor, and the lift was out of action. The stairs were quite steep and hard for them to get up and down, so after one attempt to get all our baggage and them up, I asked to change rooms. After some discussion they were given rooms on the first floor in another part of the hotel which did have a working lift, but we were stuck on the 3rd floor away from them. When we asked where breakfast was served, were told in the basement, again with no working lift to that floor. However, the helpful receptionist made arrangements for us to have breakfast in the bar on the ground floor which worked ok. In summary, unhappy that they are not really thinking about disabled customers, and when not full, why put people in the attic rooms when there are unoccupied rooms lower down? And we did not get discounted prices, even paid extra for sea view. Rooms were actually ok, except for terrible access up steep stairs, and the wash basin was so small the kettle would not fit under the tap to fill. Bathrooms needed upgrading. Front of house staff helpful, but seem to have management constraints as to what they could do about our problem. If you need disabled access I would suggest going elsewhere Collapse
Desperately in need of TLC

Spent Friday & Saturday here with ukbreaks, we have stayed before when it was Hinton Royal, but now The Strand. Shame the new owners have not spent money on it since they took over. We arrived Friday and given card to room 328, told the lift is only for one person at a time....... 5 flights of stairs later we found room. On entering couldn't believe how small, cold, and dirty it was. Bed linen stained with makeup and something else! !!!!!!! bed side light not working, Windowsill covered in dead flies and dust. I rang down to reception to complain, told by male Eastern European that he would tell maintenance, I said what about housekeeping, told it would be sorted while we were out. We returned 2 hours later, nothing changed. By now I'm furious, I go to reception, nice girl asked would I like another room, the next door room 329 available, she gave me card to go check it out, this was an improvement, not much, but bed clean, and slightly larger room. When we went to dinner that night there were only 6 people staying on DB&B and we were all on different floors, so we could have been given a room anywhere in the Hotel. Also the poor girl on reception had to run the bar as well. Needless to say we won't be back. Collapse

Feb 13/14 2017 Took 3 attempts to find a room with unused and unstained bed linen. Ended up in room 106. Dusty and grubby, broken lamp, mildew in shower, draughty window sealed with sellotape unsuccessfully. No wifi, poor tv reception. Curtains would not open fully. Corridors uneven floors. Ancient lifts were scary to use. Lift down to Bistro only took one person at a time so didn't chance going in it. Found out at 5 pm there was no evening meal available and adjoining Indian restaurant also closed. Had to find a hotel open to non residents and go out on a cold and windy night. Very little sleep from noise of wind coming through window. Breakfast awful, stewed tea and coffee, sloppy undercooked porridge. Did not try cooked breakfast. This put us off trying evening meal so went out again. Staff don't understand English and don't really care. Second night noise from other rooms, doors slamming. Lot of noise coming up from Indian Restaurant below as it closed. Gave up at midnight and checked out. For this stay we paid £170. Have asked for refund but not holding our breath. Could have stayed at Best Western York for less. Collapse
