Rooms, staff and location excellent...wi-fi the worst I've experienced

I stayed here twice in October 2016. I was very impressed with the rooms and the physical layout of the hotel. The rooms are comfortable, well-appointed, and well-maintained. Despite the city centre location, the rooms are quiet, so rest is easy. I was also very impressed with the staff, who were to a person friendly and efficient. On my first stay, the team found a way to provide me with an early check-in, which was very much appreciated. I would love to give the property a full five stars and I'm tempted to rate it lower still, all because of the very poor internet service, well below standards for a hotel of this quality, and well below acceptable for any kind of lengthy stay. The wi-fi would disconnect at random but persistent intervals, constantly requiring an email login. I had this experience on two different stays, with different devices, and with rooms on different floors and different sides of the hotel. My work was interrupted without notice, regularly, and communication with home would be cut off abruptly. I wouldn't stay here again unless the wi-fi was fixed, though given how out of character this is relative to the rest of the experience at the hotel, I'm sure it will be soon. I will check before my next visit. One small note: if you don't know Birmingham well, it's important to note that the hotel is not accessible by taxi. Taxis will need to let you off nearby and you will need to find your way there. Alternatively, if arriving by train, it's straight shot down Corporation St out of the train station. Collapse

Very easy to locate arriving at New Street Station. Very central in Birmingham within walking distance of shopping and transport. Room was nice and big, in line with other Staybridge locations I've been at. Very nice kitchen corner with enough applications to make yourself a meal. Nice, big shower and good complimentary toiletries. Complimentary breakfast in the mornings with a nice selection of foods. Possible to bring the food back up to your room as well. Good service provided by the staff at check-in and check-out. I very much enjoyed my stay! Collapse

We stayed at the hotel on Sat 1st Oct. The situation and accommodation were ideal. No complaints there. However we had a false fire alarm as it turned out at 6am on the Sunday morning. I along with several other people went to the nearest fire exit only to discover we couldn't get out because there was someone screaming and shouting on the other side of the door. A few of us ran back seven flights of stairs only to find we couldn't get back in and had to hammer on the door till someone let us in. I have rung several times and was told someone would ring me back but so far no-one has and it has been over a week! If it had been a proper fire I dread to think what would have happened. Collapse

The USP of Staybridge is the size of the rooms which are indeed a suite - the biggest hotel room I've had after Luxor in Vegas. On entry, you have a kitchenette/lounge area (+ larger TV), with sofa, then through a door the bedroom (smaller TV) and bathroom (shower/bath). The decor is a bit businessman so the overall effect is a bit soulless, but the space is quite something. The idea is you can do simple cooking/reheating (double-hob & mini-oven) for longer stays. The "gathering area" next to the breakfast tables by reception on the second floor would make a superb spot for colleagues' blue-sky thinking and planning of marketing clichés. For a place aimed squarely at businesspeople, the wifi's a bit crap, tbh - mine kept dropping and I had to keep re-entering my e-mail to get back in. Of other little gripes, the main one (for some people) is the lack of natural air - the windows don't open so you're stuck with the air-con. Collapse
