We arrived by car and had no choice but to wait on double yellows to allow unloading and valet parking in the covered park opposite. A warning of this would be helpful. The staff were very welcoming but the room was small and somewhat dingy - as was the bathroom. The bathroom appeared to have been recently refurbished but, as is often the case, the modern features were a triumph of style over function. Trying to regulate the shower temperature while at the same time controlling whether the water was directed either to the bath or the shower required a technique which escaped us. The restaurant staff were anxious to please but were let down by the kitchen. Our pasta with mushrooms turned out to be a game of hunt the mushroom. Our complaint was however courteously received and the cost of one main course was deducted from the bill. Beware though the addition of an 'optional' gratuity! All in all, very pleasant but probably not worth the £310 for 2 nights B & B. Our next 2 nights in the Fortescue in Salcombe (£220) were much better. Collapse

The views from the hotel (including our room), were exceptional, stunning, and took your breath away, but not as much as the climb back up from the beach or railway station which was conveniently placed immediately below the hotel. I and my wife are quite active, (we are both over 65), and although we managed the daily climb (twice a day) back up to the hotel, I could imagine that if you are infirm or not as fit as some people, it could be hard and would restrict your movement to and from the Hotel. The accommodation, food, and service were excellent, and if I was thinking of returning to St. Ives, I would definitely want to stay at the Harbour Hotel again! Collapse

My husband booked a seaview balcony room 117 for my 50th. I understand it was £129 per night b&b, I thought, for the location and facilities incredible value! On reading the hotel response to comments I see they are due a refurb, and I could see in places this is needed but for the price our room was perfectly acceptable. Our bed was huge, we have a superking at home, and this one felt bigger. Beautifully clean and crisp linen. Big fluffy bath robes, but had to ask for slippers to get down to the spa, as we only had our outdoor boots with us. Balcony view of the beach was glorious, we were so lucky with the temperatures for December were 13c, so switched off the heating and slept with the doors open, so could listen to the waves. French doors could do with a latch to hold them open. There was a bleach stain on our carpet, I imagine that was from a cleaner being careless, most guests wouldn't take a bottle of bleach on holiday, I'm guessing, and in any case I would have thought that would have been an insurance claim. The bathroom was really lovely, white company toiletries, although could have been two 30 ml bottles instead of one shower gel and shampoo as there were two of us, we just about eaked it out. I guess we could have asked for more, but the hotel knew there were two guests. The designer of the refurb might want to think about how girls can do their make up, the mirror over the dressing tables was a great design statement but had a concave mirror glass, so impossible to use for make up. Also very dark in that area. The mirror in the bathroom was nowhere near the sink, again not very ergonomic. Not sure how fellas wet shave. I ended up using a tiny mirror I had with me, and sat on the loo seat.. Shower was fab, a powerful rain shower. But overall for the price, it was great! Breakfast, I'm very fussy about my breakfast eggs, but was impressed by the quantity and quality (softly cooked) of my scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. Our waiter was a little brusk (just a little more warmth and a smile would be appreciated in the morning, especially as it was my birthday breakfast) ,but very efficient and kindly got me a cappacino (normally an extra) after my filter coffee had grouts in. I loved the natural yoghurt and berry compote, with a spoon of granola on. Tasty vanilla apricots too. The pastry selection as a little slim, mini pan au chocolate but no croissant, my favourite. But overall, again for the money/location it was perfectly fine. The young Reception staff were very helpful, maybe useful to have a little more verbal info on arrival about how to get to the beach and town etc on foot, recommend places for dinner that are open (a lot not this time of year). Our room was a long way from reception, through about 4 heavy spring doors, so some help with luggage or even holding the doors open for us, and showing us the way would be a fab touch at no cost to the hotel. Spa area ok, but steam room not working. I'm not sure if that is explained to customers on booking, for us it didn't matter as the sauna had water in it, but for some that are going just for the spa that might have been an issue. The jacuzzi water appeared to have a very green cloudy hue, I think that is a chlorine issue. The pool was lovely, perfect temperature, although the staff perhaps could have explained the button to turn in the jet. After a day we discovered it, which made for a great an exercise swim, as it creates a current to swim against. Not sure what to do about sun beds about the pool, but they had pools of water on, so didn't want to use them. I'm guessing this is a well known problem for spas. But again, I come back to the price, for what we paid, it was all great, if they don't hike them too much after the refurb we will be back! Collapse

Our room had a fantastic view of the beach, was spacious & clean. The staff made us feel very welcomed. We used the spa swimming pool which was great fun. Stayed for an evening meal at their restaurant. The ambience & the food at their restaurant was good although, both myself & my partner felt the service was a little quick between courses which we feel didn't let us enjoy the bottle of wine we ordered. Having just returned from this hotel we thought we would like to tell people what it was like for our xmas party. The room was nice, clean & we had a sea view which was nice. The car was parked for us by a porter, the reception area is ok, the bar area has wonderful views but that is where it ends. The prices for a drink is we all thought ridiculously over priced, the bar maid said well you are staying in a 4 star hotel, having stayed in 5 star hotels elsewhere in the country & abroad the tariff was nowhere near as expensive as this 4 star hotel. The evening meal was ok that is it just an ok, the breakfast was not very good, cheap food comes to mind. The hotel didn't have any real xmas spirit which is a shame, we have stayed in St Ives before in 2 different hotels, Tregenna Castle & the Carbis Bay, it would be good if they went & seen them to see how its done, which is on the party front & food & drink prices. Overall we were very disappointed with the whole stay, we will not be returning here. It is not a 4 star standard hotel. Collapse

Booked by my partner as a birthday treat, who paid for a side sea view room but on arrival the staff had not reserved the room and gave us a disgusting 'inland view' room with frosted glass and small window looking out to road / wall. I've read the manager's comments regarding refurbishment, forget it, that room will never be any good, use it for something else. My partner was very upset and wasn't prepared to stay, a look at Booking, com revealed that sea view rooms were still being advertised for that night so armed with that information we tackled reception who said they were unaware of the ad but changed us a side sea room which we had booked in the first place. What's going on??? The side sea room was clean and pleasant with a nice side sea, how much nicer it would have been to have had that without the hassle. My only other gripe was with breakfast on our first morning, dried up, 2 rashers of bacon dry and welded together, hash brown like a biscuit, black pudding gone to powder and dry sausage. After mentioning the previous breakfast, on the second morning the breakfast was cooked fresh, why did we have to mention it to get a freshly cooked breakfast, you had 4 chefs I understand from the waitress. Sorry one more thing, at the evening meal the staff were very slow to clear empty plates and bring the dessert menu. Collapse

Visited St Ives many times in the past and will from next year be down very often. 1st time we have stayed at this hotel. Some rooms do take dogs which we had planned to do but due to last minute planned visits when down bringing Bertie wasn't possible ☹️ Great view from our room, stained carpets but presume that's from dogs staying. Had to ask for room to be serviced on 2nd day as by late afternoon it hadn't happened as it had been forgotten but lady who was asked to do the job was very apologetic and indeed very pleasant. Shame breakfast wasn't as brilliant as it should have been and judging by some comments on here it's not a one off. Service was very good but choice could be more inspiring and more hot food served. I asked for mushrooms to be added to one breakfast and only got 1 mushroom!!!! Having called into the Carbis Bay Hotel for breakfast on 1st day as arrived in area before 8am I'd suggest hotel management visit for breakfast to see what an amazing breakfast staying in a top end hotel should be like. This should be a top end hotel as the lounge areas are very well presented, views are amazing, terraces in the summer will be amazing, porter to park your car is a luxury, great entrance, good spa and a rumoured refurb of rooms this winter but cost of staying in the room we were in wasn't cheap and I'm sure would be frightening over new year!!! Hopefully from the comments I've read and what I've seem the missing parts will be improved and the hotel will achieve or return to its amazing level and all comments on here reflect that. Collapse
