We have booked at St George with supposedly a decent discount, and knowing the "real' price has pretty much worked up my expectations with this hotel which were unfortunately not met. I'd say the room and the facilities were after all quite all right, but it was worth the price we paid only. It was good to have breakfast in the hotel even though the choice was not too big, but for us it was fine, we are not picky or something. I missed real coffee though which is, I believe, was a shame not to have. The room as such was pretty good and the staff cleaned it every day. Unfortunately though we did not have a creek view so we could not enjoy, I must say, the biggest appeal of this hotel. Let me start off with the positive things. The best thing about this hotel is its location. Al-Ras metro station is really 5-6 minutes walk, very easily accessible. Abra docks are also about 10 minutes down from the hotel, which is an easy way to cross to the Bur Dubai side to the heritage area. Buses stop nearby either at al-Ras station or further down at the gold souq - this latter is like 15 minutes walk, or 20-25 if you do some window-shopping on the way. Very convenient for those who do not want to get a taxi - which also come this way pretty often. There are Arabic and Indian/Pakistani restaurants around but not too many, to be honest. The gold souq and Deira souq is very close, also both within walking distance. Our room was not too big but spacious enough for 2. The bed was pretty comfortable and cleaning was done every day, which is a positive thing. Towels were changed too. It was also good to have breakfast in the hotel so we did not have to go out to look for some food right away. However, the choice was not too big, but that is all right, we are not picky or something. I only missed real coffee, which is, in my opinion, a shame not to have. Now about the negative side. The biggest issue we faced was at our check-in. Me and my partner arrived there around 10pm with our reservation, ready to pay, and presented our travel documents to the receptionist, who then told us, "it is not allowed" - which I failed to understand at first, since I had a valid reservation with a valid passport and my partner had a valid UAE ID. Then it turns out, their so-called hotel policy was to not to allow unmarried couples stay in the same room. This policy was not written anywhere, neither at the reservation site, nor at the reception itself, so I am not sure how we were supposed to know that without a marriage certificate we would not be allowed to stay there. It then raises a few points with me: how would a receptionist be able to decide by the looks if we are married or not? Because he did not ask about it before making a statement. It was, I believe, not written on my forehead. And then, as per their recount, this question would only be raised for mixed nationality couples which I found pretty discriminating, knowing that we faced this trouble only because we happen to be of different nationalities. Finally we needed to ask to talk to the manager to get it sorted out, who had no issue whatsoever to give us a room. Weird. Faced with such issues, all what there was good in this hotel seemed somewhat less good, to be honest. Added to this is the fact that nobody even bothered to say a word to the guest who was smoking his cigar at the lobby while a big sign on the wall states that smoking is forbidden by law. Let me ask, then, why are unwritten rules so well applied, while nobody seems to bother about the written ones? Very disappointing attitude from the staff, would probably not stay in this hotel again, even if I decide to carry my marriage certificate with me for a holiday. Also, our room was a bit noisy due to the proximity of the port but we could sleep well anyway. This is a note to those who cannot sleep with some noise. Mosques are also very close so the call to prayer might wake you up if you are not used to it. Notes for the hotel management: please state your hotel policies on the reservation page to avoid these problems with other guests, it gives a very bad perception of your hotel. You can state, couples need to bring their marriage certificate, like you would state, pets not allowed. Also, I suggest you make sure that your written rules are applied just as well as non-written ones. Notes to travelers: if you are a mixed couple, then do carry your marriage certificate. If you are not married, then do not choose this hotel. Apparently though you will not face this trouble if you are a same nationality couple. Collapse

Stayed in the hotel last week while transiting through Dubai. Although it's a 3* hotel but it's service was as good as 5* hotel. Once we reached there Anwar happily welcomed us and gave us an upgrade to executive suite. They also arranged complimentary airport drop next morning. Pros: located at the best location in Deira overlooking the Dubai Creek; 5 mins walk to Gold/Spice souk. Just other side of the creek is Meenabazar. So an ideal place for shopaholics transiting through Dubai. Spacious, old decor but well maintained neat and clean rooms, big toilets. Cons: the lighting may be improved. Collapse
