This is our third visit to Solberge and as before it was a very enjoyable stay. The location is unbeatable and the staff ensure that guests are well looked after to a very high degree, we are not very mobile and when staff walk some distance to open the next door you feel that they really care. We had a slight mix up regarding the room we had booked but it was sorted out in a manner which left both side happy and the room we had was fitted out beautifully. Good breakfast service looking out on a southerly vista was a good start to the day Collapse

What a special experience in this stately old home. Starting at reception where we were treated as though we were special guests through to Gay (our breakfast host) it was old world charm with a very professional touch. Staff presentation and service was exemplary. Then we got to our room and it continued to top class experience. Dinner was wonderful and breakfast was a feast! Highly recommended Collapse

We have stayed at Solberge Hall many times over the last five years. However we are unlikely to stay there again following our last visit due to a number of service issues. We were asked on our return on the second evening if we wanted to dine that evening, which we did. We were then told that they could not serve us before 8.30 as they had just taken a large booking. We said this was far too late for us and that we only required a simple main course and were happy to eat in the bar area, however apparently the kitchen couldn't cope! We ended up going out for a meal which is the last thing we wanted to do after a long hard day. The service at breakfast was very slow and not in sequence of guest arrival, and then the order was incorrectly fulfilled. The waitress was good at talking though! We do not feel dogs (except support dogs) should be allowed in public areas where food is being served. Cars were parked on the front of the hotel where it clearly stated parking was not allowed and the staff did nothing about it. The mattress on our bed felt like the springs were coming through. The sash window would not stay open, someone had fitted a catch but in the wrong place for it to work! Overall, we felt the standards had slipped significantly since our previous visits and certainly do not justify the prices charged. Collapse

Was bought a de luxe cream tea for Mother's Day, which we went for today. Setting was lovely, staff friendly and efficient. Tea was delicious, really couldn't fault it as we both cleared our plates, my husband says they have fantastic quality cakes. We would definitely go back for another visit and would like to sample their other meals as well. Collapse

Solberg Hall Hotel could be a very good place to stay but is let down by a number of easily rectifiable issues. To begin with positives – parking is plentiful. The surroundings are peaceful. The bedrooms are of a good size and well furnished. The bathrooms are very good – large and modern. The staff are young and helpful. Breakfast is good with a wide choice of cereals, fruit, juices and many options for cooked breakfasts. Now the problems. Major one is the dinner arrangements. There is a strict only 3 bookings in any half hour period. There are twenty four rooms. That means someone eats late. Add to that the slow service, particularly if you have a late slot – we booked for 2 courses at 7.30pm and were served dessert at 9.00pm. And then there is the food. The menu is static (we stayed 3 nights) and short. The aim appears to be to the haute cuisine end of the scale and the price reflects that aim. But if quantity is to be small then quality of ingredients and presentation is essential. They had neither. In particular, my wife had the same desert 2 nights running. First night, in an early slot, it was just acceptable at the price. The second night at 9.00 pm it was not. It seems that peaches had perhaps run short and the presentation was ‘slap happy’. Add to that the non matching very poor quality cutlery; the arrival of steaks after 45 minutes but no steak knives until after the food arrived; and the same again for dessert cutlery and you begin to get the picture. It seemed that the chef decided when the customers could come and he/she would serve them in their own good time. A case of the tail wagging the dog. And don’t be fooled by the 2 menus on the website – only the expensive one appears to be available even though the cheaper one was in the room. When asking if we could eat in the bar off the other menu, this was frowned upon and we were told that it would not alter the 3 only slot times. The bar is not really set up for eating anyway. Minor issues would include : leaving the sheet on the bed crumpled from previous night use; washing wooden floors and vacuuming stairs during the busy breakfast time period; not ensuring the dining tables are placed so staff and customers can get round ( the few in the centre were not always placed well); not escorting arrivals to room but just giving directions; not checking if all was OK when dining; lumpy mattress; not cleaning hard to get places like behind the dressing table and behind the curtain valance; no attempt to keep outside window clean; allocating a room over an archway through which cars drove and made a noise like thunder and meant 6 steps down to the bathroom when the hotel didn’t appear to be full ;coat hook with one screw missing and a loose toilet roll holder; delivery of wrong morning paper along with the right one. Many of the minor issues would have gone unnoticed but for the general feeling that the place wasn’t quite under control. It seemed to be crying out for a manager to just polish the edges, direct the staff and tell the evening chef that the customer decides when, where and what to eat. On a positive note, the breakfast waitress was great. Humorous and local. She gave us a great start to the day. And it was not so bad that I would not stay here again but I would not dine there - there are plenty of places to dine in Northallerton. Hopefully a manager will be installed who can make the minor adjustments that would make it a very good hotel. Collapse
