We stayed here for one night on a Secret Escapes deal which included a 3 course evening meal and a cream tea. For the amount we paid it was excellent value. The hotel is a lovely old hall in grounds that streatch all around it. From our bedroom all we could see were fields. It is very peaceful and off the beaten track. The room was huge and contained a roll top bath as well as an on-suite with big walk in shower and was one of the best rooms we have ever stayed in. Slightly disappointing was that on close inspection it was looking a little worse for wear in places. Although overall it was clean the curtains had what looked like a water stain and there was a large stained patch in the ceiling over the window where it looked like there had been a leak. The curtains were also insufficiency thick to keep out the morning light. The meal we had was excellent and the staff were attentive and friendly. Breakfast was also very good with a selection of cereals, fruit, pastries etc and also the option of full Yorkshire or other hot food. The cream tea which was included was a little disappointing as we just had a hot drink with cream and jam but only one small scone each (of the size you would get with a full cream tea that had a variety of other cakes to supplement it). However we were lucky enough to have lovely weather so we're able to sit outside on the patio which meant that the scone disappointment was mitigated somewhat! I would definitely stay here again as the downsides were small in comparison to the overall standard of food, accommodation and service. Shame about the few issues as it would have got 5 blobs! We stayed at the hotel for two nights for our friends wedding. We had a shaky start with a hiccup with our booking a couple of weeks before, and whilst it was all sorted it did leave us a little anxious about our stay, but we needn't have worried! On arrival we were given a very warm welcomed by hotel staff, who even offered to help carry our things from the car to our rooms. Throughout the stay the staff were so friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble and we did really feel like guests and not just customers if that makes sense. Our friends who stayed also felt the same. The hotel had that traditional country house feel throughout - whilst aged and a little dated in some areas for us it just added to the overall charm of the hotel. There are original fireplaces in reception, the lounge and restaurant which are used and I imagine would be lovely in winter. The hotel grounds are nice for a walk around and there appeared to be a woodland path also, which we didn't have time to explore so the grounds could be quite vast. The food was fantastic - we ate in the restaurant the first evening and it was fine dining style/quality food. Interesting choices on the menu and we really enjoyed what we had. We noticed that the 'lounge' had a separate menu which was more bar food and looked equally good. Breakfast each day had a range of self serve cereals, fruit and pastries and staff brought teas/coffees and toast to the table and you could order a range of hot options from the menu - again great quality! Our friends wedding aside (which was fantastic too!) we really enjoyed our stay and are hoping to return later in the year and bring our new puppy to make use of the 'dog friendly' element of the hotel. Thanks for a great stay! Collapse

I booked an afternoon tea for my husband as a belated treat. As expected and we were not disappointed the house was grand with lovely views across the valley. There was ample parking at the side and the back of the house. The staff were very friendly, courteous and non intrusive. We were quickly brought our afternoon tea and staff made sure our teapot remained full. The sandwiches were tasty and the cake were absolutely delicious. The scone was slightly on the dry side but a big helping of clotted cream and jam sorted that out. We spent a lovely afternoon inside weather permitting we could have explored the grounds or had the choice of having tea on the terrace...perhaps next time when the weather forecast is good. A big thank you to the staff. Collapse

Booked secret escapes deal for overnight stay, breakfast and cream tea on arrival. Hotel set in lovely grounds with far reaching views over open countryside. Grass was being cut but noticed the following day that the cuttings were left so looked untidy. Also, dead flower in baskets and pots around hotel which was disappointing. The room(16) was small but clean and the soft furnishings, towels etc were new and fresh. Good refreshment tray. Small TV. Cream tea consisted of a scone, butter and tea/coffee only which to be honest was disappointing as we were expecting more. We requested jam and cream which was provided without any fuss. The evening meal was very good , quality ingredients and excellent service. All of the staff go out of their way to provide a first class service. Breakfast offered a good selection, cooked to order. Overall we enjoyed our stay but recognise that the hotel is old and dated in places. As the food and service were good, this made the cost just about acceptable, Collapse
