We stayed at the Sol Principe for a week b&b in early September, to grab a little late sunshine and warmth before the English Autumn sets in back home. We had no great expectations, just wanted a relaxing break, and that’s what the Sol Principe provided. We’ve holidayed in a number of Spanish resorts over recent years, so we have a lot to compare to. The hotel is larger than ones we’ve previously stayed in. I think it’s probably considerably older too. Despite clearly having been refurbished over the years, our room was showing signs of aging. We had a patio door that didn’t lock, furniture that had drawers removed and replaced with a single shelf – the old fixing holes filled with silicone, and small holes in curtains. The bathroom looked tired, there was a ceiling tile that didn’t fit, a shower head that looked as if it had seen better days, a hairdryer that kept cutting out, but most of all, a towel rail that had a habit of falling from it’s loose wall fittings and sounding like a fire bell when it hit the floor! The room was a bit on the small side, you get a big Tv but there’s only so much BBC World News and Sky News you can watch – no other English channels were provided. There’s only one wall socket in the bedroom would you believe, with a second precariously placed to the side of the single sink in the bathroom – other than that, nothing, so charging items was a bit of a juggle. We had a small fridge, a safe (chargeable), but no kettle. Gasping most mornings!. One disappointment was that we booked a double room. Had confirmation of a double room, but was in fact two single beds pushed together. Other reviewers have commented on this too. When is a double bed a double bed? Facilities throughout the hotel looked good. Dining room was okay, as was the food. Some mornings the patio area wasn’t open as it was still being laid up. The hotel is clearly geared up for families, especially ones with small kids. I can imagine this would be a great place for younger families to holiday at, however for us travelling as a couple, we felt a little unfulfilled. It just didn’t inspire us. Don’t get me wrong, the hotel and staff are all very nice, but that, for us, is just about it. It’s nice. We’ve stayed in better four star hotels. Personally I’d view the Sol Principe as three stars. Stayed here for 2 weeks and had an amazing time. British people are nearly a minority in this hotel as there are several nationalities here including French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Swedish, Dutch... As always will review this hotel in sections so that it is easier to work out what is what. Arrival & Grounds Hotel reception is very modern and spacious. Was greeted by a lovely lady who checked us in and advised us on how the meal plans work, hired our safe out, asked about our journey etc. Very nice start. Hotel is set on very large grounds, takes around 20 mins to walk all the way round the outside of it. Consists of a huge reception, sports room, indoor bar, gym, games room etc Pools Hotel has several pools including kids splash park, kids pool and 2 huge pools with jaccuzis built in. Also round the other side of the hotel is another pool. Plenty of sunbeds and space around the pools with built in parasols. Please ignore other reviews about getting up at 6am for sunbeds, you can go down to the pool at 8am most days and still find a perfect space with a parasol. Sunbeds are unlocked at 9am and we did see staff removing towels if they are left on the sunbeds all morning with no one using them Food & Bars If you go half board you have breakfast included and then a choice between lunch and dinner, drinks are not included with lunch or dinner and are very expensive to buy, so we bought our own from the SuperSol shop opposite hotel. Food was extremely nice, big selection including theme nights. Always something to eat and food was very fresh including different fishes, kebabs, even roast dinners, plus the usual things like pizza, burgers, chips, salads and breads. HUGE choice of deserts which were actually great quality and tasted amazing. Breakfast was the best meal with a huge selection from cooked breakfast, fruits, yoghurt, cereals, pastries, milkshakes, champagne, juices. The second restaurant next to the hair salon is very quiet for breakfast so I would suggest using this instead of the main restaurant. Rooms Rooms were very clean and smart. Included a fridge, TV, air dryer and shower over bath. Cleaned to a good standard daily and towels and sheets replaced every few days. No problems here at all Staff Staff were very friendly on the whole, it does depend on how you speak to them to start with. Cleaners and reception very friendly. Staff in the restaurants do get a bit moody but I assume this is due to people leaving so much mess and treating it like a tip. They seem very grateful if you tidy up a little bit after yourself, but as usual it seemed to be the British making most of the mess. Location Located literally on the beach, there is a back gate which is open till 1am (you need your room card to get in) outside this gate is the beach and a huge promenade full of bars, restaurants and shops. You can walk all the way to Benalmadena along this promenade, although it takes a long time! Hotel is around 30 mins from the main centre, which is accessible via 2 lifts which take you up, or you can walk up the stairs which have shops either side all the way up Summary Would definitely recommend this hotel for couples, families, or anyone really. Back from 1 week all inclusive 2nd visit to hotel. Requested a low floor which we got, room was ready on arrival which was great, had requested a double bed as last year had 2 singles - wish we had stuck with 2 singles every time I turned over I thought I was going to fall out the bed it was tiny, never a double, this surprised me as I have been in another hotel in this chain of Sol hotels and the beds were huge. Patio door didn't lock unless 2 people pushed the door and slammed it which we didn't do as didn't want to disturb neighbours. Lack of sockets as stated by other reviews only 1 in room and 1 in bathroom. Fridge was excellent kept everything cold. We went for evening meal one night and husband forgot something and went back to room and door handle came off in his hand as he closed door so he was locked in room, I had to leave my meal and go to reception to ask for maintenance, 20 mins later they still hadn't arrived so had to go back again to reception and after this maintenance arrrived and managed to fix door but I couldn't get back to finish dinner as it was over by this time. Room also wasn't cleaned very well the whole time we were there it was ok just not spotless but I do realise that housekeeping have a lot of rooms and it was also the same girl each day so she was always busy but we had a ball of dust that remained the whole week we were there. The dining room is the noisiest I have ever been in, in my life it is constant clattering and banging. The food was ok not great and some strange combinations, nice meat one night but only chips no potatoes and then other nights lovely dauphinois potatoes but nothing to go with it. Lovely pork sausages every morning except for a Sunday when they had none. Had to request bacon one morning as it wasn't replaced, had to wait 10 mins and by this time rest of my breakfast was cold. So staff could have been quicker filling up empty trays. Too many kids wandering about filling their plates and walking into people and also picking things up then putting them back down. I really do think children should be supervised in a place that sells hot (ish) food but that is the parents fault and not the hotel. I struggled to find a dinner each night and usually ended up with pizza or salad, meats and cheeses. Also don't understand why people need to take enough fruit to start their own shop? I assume they were taking it from the dining room to eat later which seems a bit tight to me. Can you not just buy it from a shop? The entertainment was terrible, they would have been better not bothering it was really bad, except one night when 3 men from South Africa sang Motown they should book them every night. All inclusive is a good deal and I found this year the staff were a lot friendlier when giving drinks to all inclusive guests, surprised the hotel didn't try to sell us the gold all inclusive on arrival tho as this appeared to be a good deal and if we had known about it sooner we may have taken this on. Special mention to Pedro in the bar, a true gentleman, always happy, friendly and helpful he is a credit to this hotel. Collapse

We were located in the front block with side views of the beach and sea. Room was spotlessly clean although a little cramped as there were 2 adults and a teenager whose bed was at the base of our bed so very little floor space left but as the room was only for sleeping in this wasn't much of a problem. The All Inclusive option was excellent and the food hall was very clean. Other places I've been the floor has had spills on it but at Sol Principe everything was cleaned up promptly. Sunbeds opened at 9am and there was never really a rush but if you like a particular spot you would need to be there just before 9. I never watched the shows in the evening out the back as these were for the younger kids and families. We watched the shows a few times at the beach side but the speakers weren't great and found the singers hard to hear. We usually went out for walks at night and then had a few drinks later on before heading to our room so I cant give a proper opinion of the evening entertainment. The only thing I didn't like was the lack of poolside activities, there was the 'normal' stuff like french bowls, rifle shooting, table tennis, killer darts and killer pool etc. The activities here seem to be more exercise based. Torremolinos is a great resort and the hotel is 10 minutes from the airport by taxi. We never usually go to the same resort 2 years in a row but I can honestly say this is one of my favourite places for the short flight, short transfer and beautiful hotels overlooking the beach and a footpath that runs the whole way to Benalmadena with lovely shops and cafes and bars the whole way along. I would definitely use this hotel again. Collapse
Typical low end all inclusive

Nice location with basic accommodation and run of the mill food at breakfast. ... I don't know why people were lining up in the morning to eat. Found a nice little coffee shop nearby instead. It's seems to be popular with the package tour groups.
