We visit Philadelphia regularly and have stayed in several of the nicer hotels. I booked the Sofitel as we had enjoyed an excellent experience at the Sofitel Paris le Faubourg just last year. I booked the same Junior Suite that we had in Paris. Check in, valet parking and any interaction with staff was very good, but the condition of the room was below what I would expect from a hotel of this caliber. Everything, including the bed, was worn out and in dire need of renovation. Unless I see that they have made renovations, we will not stay here again. Collapse

Last week I spent a night at the Sofitel. My stay went well enough, but it's what happened there a couple of days later that is the problem. I had spent the night at the hotel across the street, and as it was a cold winter morning, I decided to cut through the Sofitel lobby to use their side door as a way to cut some time off of my trip out to grab some breakfast. As I walked through the lobby, I saw a few NYT supplements on one of the tables. I stopped to page through one of them. As I was doing so, one of their security team walked over to me and says, "You know this hotel is not the same property as the hotel across the street." I was so taken aback that I asked him to repeat himself. "You know, these two properties are not owned by the same company." I was completely floored, and stuttered out some answer before leaving the lobby. After grabbing my breakfast, I went back into the hotel and described the incident to someone at the front desk. His reply: "We've had a security incident here recently." How is someone standing in the lobby -- a PUBLIC area -- a security incident. I wasn't bothering anyone at all, nor was I doing anything illegal. This was plain harassment by some bored security officer. I was wearing jeans, tennis shoes, and a jacket and hat--standard attire for me. There is no excuse for this. I've always felt welcomed and comfortable in this hotel before, wearing pretty much the same attire, so why was I the subject of this harassment now? The lobby was basically empty, so I assume the security guard just wanted to give himself something to do. Collapse

We've stayed at this hotel a few times. Its a convenient location in downtown Philly. Its close to many of the restaurants, bars, shopping, and some historic sites. You can easily drive to the hotel from the interstate highway. The hotel staff is always pleasant and accommodating. Our room was clean, updated, and comfortable. I would gather that many of the rooms of various sizes are the same. You will, of course, have to pay more for a room with more than a view of the building next door. It IS in the city... so if you want more perks - you just have to pay more for the choice of room for your stay. The hotel also has a bar and restaurant. We thought the bar was nice - the restaurant was okay - nothing "over the top" - but convenient and good place to eat. Being in downtown Philly - there are many other choices to eat and drink... and, unless you don't wish to venture out of the hotel, we suggest you check out other locations. Uber and Lyft are available in the city to take you just about anywhere you can't walk to within reason from the hotel (such as the Reading Marketplace or PA Convention Center). Philly has SEPTA subway that runs north and south in the center of the city. The subway can be a huge help if you want to head over the the stadiums for a sports or concert event. From check in to check out - our stay was enjoyable and find it to be a wonderful place to stay during our trips to Philly. Collapse

This poor hotel needs a face lift. The decor at one time was avant-garde, now looks dated. The art is just out of style- particularly in the room. The brown tones of the lobby and rooms feels dark and oppressive. They have candle lanterns lit in the lobby at night which would be lovely except that the glass really needs a good cleaning- smudges everywhere. The doors to the rooms were all beautiful inlaid wood but are now scratched and nicked. You can see where the luggage carts had hit the doors. No one has oiled the wood or sought to try and color in the nicks. Try some Old English. The wood furniture although good at one time reflects the same scratches, dings and nicks. The wood closets and furniture in the rooms have the same issues. Scratches and nicks everywhere. There is an air of faded shabbiness throughout the hotel. My room shower tile grouting was discolored and showed multiple attempts at patching giving it uneven and grungy feel. For the money, it's not worth it. Service was very good and people are nice and helpful but the physical aspects are really in sad shape. Again, for the price, there are more updated places available. Collapse
