We booked this room the night before we were travelling and staying in London for 2 nights on business. The location was fine being in Paddington and near to underground, so location was good. The hotel was certainly clean and tidy and the breakfast was also good quality as was the overall staff service. Now then, this is where the downside comes in, so please BE WARNED!!! The room sizes are extremely small and this is by no means exaggerated. When we got into our room 305, we could hardly turnaround in there, so much so that the double bed filled the room from one wall to the other which meant that we could not access the wardrobes, it was so frustrating. When I asked one of the cleaners who lacked any decent English if all rooms were the same size was told yes they were so I did not complain. However when I was leaving on the last morning, saw an open room opposite ours being cleaned and so investigated with the cleaners who was there. This room was decent similar to a Travelodge room, so had I known this on arrival and not told something else, would certainly have complained and requested another room. We were at fault having not read the trip advisor comments in detail from others prior to booking, had we done so we would have known what to expect. Overall the place was tidy and clean to be fair, but I would probably think twice before returning here, only due to room size. Collapse

Honestly we were attracted to the Shaftesbury first of all by price, around 500 pounds for four nights with a full breakfast. It turned out to be a great location as well, a three minute walk from Paddington Station with access to trains, multiple tube lines and the Heathrow Express, and in the other direction a short walk to Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. Yet despite being so central, the hotel is set back on a quiet, rather stately street. Full disclosure: the "deluxe double" room may remind you of a cabin on a cruise ship. It wqs clean, and comfortable, but in our case, so small that the bathroom door could not be fully opened because the bed was in the way. The shower was probably less than a square yard and because there was no shelf provided, the shampoo, etc had to sit on the shower floor. We are relatively thin and limber and had no problem but it was hard to imagine how a bigger person would cope with it. The bed is well lit for reading, but the desk was in a dark corner. The great mystery of the room, is that we could not find a way to turn on the lights in the bathroom without turning on the light in the bedroom as well. Perhaps its something about British electricity that we don't grasp. The breakfast buffer was plentiful and varied, with cheese and cold meats, fruit and yogurt as well as hot items. The staff was unfailingly friendly, tho personally I would have preferred to serve myself hot coffee from the buffet, rather than trouble them to bring me a pot. All in all, we were very happy with our stay and will probably return. Collapse
Extremely reasonable, lovely staff, close to Paddington Station

This hotel was my last minute book for a business purpose, because I needed easy access to Paddington station and Heathrow. Hotel is not more than 5 min walk from Paddington station and also very close to Hyde Park and Lancaster Gate Station. So it is very good location for business and leisure, for weekend or short stays. I asked for quite room and the staff was so nice that they even show me the available ones that I could choose where I would like to stay. So I choose the 4 floor where rooms were renovated and windows were changed and it has no noise from outside when they were closed. When they are open it is not so noise, but I prefer really quiet places. Generally, all single rooms are very small with single beds. Personally for me because of the location, I suppose was fine. Bed was comfortable so I could not complain. Because my stay was for business, I didn’t spend so long time in the hotel, but was always clean. Only thing that I didn’t like so much, was the bathroom, it was very small, maybe not so comfortable for big people, for me was more or less fine, but difficult to move much under the shower. Breakfast was nice, not so big variety, but I could make some combinations, but it always has everything that you need for English breakfast if you are fan. Also Denisa from the dining room was also very polite and helpful during my stay. She welcomes other guests and me always with a smile, trying to help with what we want if she can and wishing nice day to everyone when leaving! So I could really feel welcome in the hotel. It was pleasure stay. Collapse

I became a VIP member of Shaftesbury in 2014 when the British pound was almost twice the US dollar and I am happy for it! Hotels were super expensive. I wanted quality on a tight budget and the Shaftesbury Hotels offered that. I have stayed at almost ALL of their locations - some much better than others. Be careful when booking, some of the rooms are as small as closets but all very nicely decorated with amenities. Collapse
