I used to love staying at this hotel regularly under previous management, but the Marriott management has taken it to a new level - our stay was awesome! We stayed for three nights, part business but mainly pleasure. Reception and check-in were very smooth, our room was well equipped and had a great view of the bridge, harbour, boats and ferries. The bed was excellent, mini-bar the best I've seen, with pre-mixed cocktails as well as interesting/different snack items. We loved the bathroom too. The bar is now great, well staffed and mixing fantastic cocktails. We also loved the extra food options, with burgers, ribs etc. from the Kerrigans van on the wharf outside. The location is superb, not just for the view. It is an easy walk to The Rocks, Circular Quay and the Opera House, as well as new cafes and restaurants along Hickson Road. Collapse

From the moment we walked through the door we felt special. Complimentary champagne and chocolate dipped strawberries made our long weekend great from the start. Perfectly located almost smack bang under the Harbour Bridge. 5 minutes walk to Circular Quay and The Rocks. Our room was delightful with the high ceilings and old wooden beam still in place from its previous life as a warehouse. Beautifully decorated in blue and white linen hues. Very comfortable and no noise. Our view was westwards towards the next dock but you could see out to the waterway. Harbour view rooms available but much more expensive of course. Lovely bar area to catch up with friends and breakfast had a good array of food. Free WiFi. Staff very attentive and efficient!! Thanks for a wonderful pre-wedding catch up with my friends. Thanks for the complimentary champagne in our room. Collapse

First, the location. Could not be better. Pier One means pier one, like immediately under the bridge. If you enjoy Sydney for it's harbor and maritime activities then this is the hotel for you. The Rocks 'hood is fantastic. Such a great place to get out and walk around. The people are friendly, the history palpable. Catch a ferry to literally anywhere Sydney-side and beyond right here. Water taxis available immediately at the hotel (it's on a pier!) and were an unusual and convenient way to get around quickly. Top quality restaurants, shops, and walkable pedestrian-friendly streets are a dime a dozen in this neighborhood. There is some threat of development, and I hope the city snaps out of it and preserves this area. The on-property restaurant, The Gantry, might be the best on-property restaurant I've ever had the pleasure to try. Arrived (a super compressed business trip) and headed straight into the restaurant for a late lunch. Perused the menu and thought I made a big fat pretentious mistake. Food arrives and...heaven? At lunch?!? Wagyu beef that was to die, tender and delicious. Breakfast "buffet" was like visiting your friend's rich old aunt who lets you raid the cupboards and pantry for whatever you want. Grab a juice out the fridge, some eggs from the kitchen and off you go. Amazing. Also, not cheap. Now the rooms. Ancient bones (remember the pier?), and I get that. Wavy halls, creaky floors, got it, "character". I stayed here a couple of years ago and remembered the rooms with direct access to the pier out a slider (Waterside?), so I booked one in that category. What I did not remember was the noise and complete lack of privacy in these rooms. Due to the hectic business trip I was on my times were a bit odd, and I found myself with a couple of hours mid-day to catch a quick nap between engagements. Not possible in these rooms. Every single sound from the surrounding rooms was transmitted entirely into these rooms. So my neighbors conference call was heard word for word. Doors opening sounded as if they were the doors to MY room being opened and closed. Foot falls were as if they were within arms reach. Traffic in the halls was clear as day. Did not get a productive nap or much sleep. You do have direct access to the pier, which was great, but there is very little privacy. There is a slat wood privacy screen across part of the slider, but it doesn't really do much except to limit your view out and provide a false sense of security. At night when you have the lights on every passer by can see inside your room. Also, there was an odor in my room (16) that was exceptionally unpleasant. Sewage. From the floor drain in the bathroom. Keeping the bathroom door shut helped a bit, but it wasn't great. Now the second room. Asked the front desk about changing rooms and they offered a few different options. Some at no cost and some incurring an upgrade cost. Naturally, I chose the absolute most expensive, the Admiral Suite. The hotel offered a good discount due to my then-current experience, which was much appreciated. This room was absolute hotel room magic (see pics attached). On the harbor, huge outdoor space, direct views of the bridge, views of the opera house, expansive windows letting everything in, and a fantastic bathroom. Even now thinking back I long for this room, it was that good. The concierge service was similarly fantastic. Asked for restaurant recommendations that were walkable. The concierge (wish I could remember his name, tall and slender and exceptional) made a recommendation and reservation and followed up with a small gift and note in the room to follow up. Extraordinary. This was my second visit to this property and I cannot wait to return. Collapse
