I recently was on abusiness trip for 3 days with a 2-night stay. 99% I usually stay in the higher end hotels when I am here in Calgary, however due to circumstances, not of my choice, I was booked at the Sandman Hotel. I loathed the fact that I was staying here, however upon arrival I could see lots of construction is being done in the foyer and lobby. I immediately asked the front desk “Guest Service Manager” if there was newly renovated suite and if so, I’d like to upgrade. She said certainly and it was not an issue. The long and short, I had a brand-new room on the 18th floor; corner view of Southwest Calgary, and let’s be honest in the dead of winter, there wasn’t a lot to look out at. The bottom line, the room; a king bed; bed sheets; bathroom; carpets and even baseboards were COMPLETELY renovated. I will give credit when credit is due, this hotel and its staff DESERVE a five-star rating for the much needed improvements from when I stayed here in 1988 during the Calgary Olympics. Lastly, they have underground parking and they have an attached restaurant called Moxies, which is a great pub and restaurant. Collapse

I’m sure this is a nice hotel most of the time. However they’re doing A TON of construction right now. The pool area is closed. Gym smells & tastes like drywall dust. Noise on lower lvls is obnoxious!

Why is front desk customer service always frustrating?

The hotel is in a decent downtown location with a coffee shop, burger joint and convenience store all within a 2 minute walk. Also, a beer and wine store around the block. Hotel is currently under renovations so the pool and hot tub facility was closed. Front desk and lobby is under full-blown renovation and was very, very cold when checking in. Maybe that's why front desk staff are unfriendly and short-tempered? So, about front desk staff courtesy... This isn't my first complaint about a Sandman and front desk staff that are poor with their customer service. I'm not asking for someone to simply stand down and be walked over - I'm asking for the first person I talk to when entering a Sandman to have the ability to resolve a check-in issue with the simplest hint of empathy or understanding. Sometimes, an issue with check-in is not MY fault. Sometimes it's Sandman's. I could rant about this forever, but no one seems to give a rip anymore. Room was clean and comfortable. Bed was good. Hallway was under renovation. Elevators (at least 1 in particular) would stop every time at one floor and then continue. Moxie's (entrance from the lobby) was great. Stay for the convenience of location, but don't expect much at the front desk. Collapse

When I booked I wasn’t made aware there was ongoing construction which meant the pool and related amenities were shut down. I specifically booked a hotel with a pool because I wanted to use it. The construction meant a noisy, cluttered lobby and getting elevators was a pain as the crews had them tied up. I understand upgrades happen but this seems highly disorganized and chaotic with little thought to guest comfort. And I will repeat, I wasn’t made aware of the construction when I booked, which was only a few weeks earlier. The rooms themselves were average, nothing I haven’t experienced in hotels at lower rates. All in all it was a bad stay. The one bright part was the bar was pretty good. I hope the upgrades bring about a lot of changes because in my opinion this place needs extensive overhauling. Collapse

Location: This hotel is right next to bus stops and train stops. There are loads of good restaurants within a very short walk. The walk to the "fun strip" of 17th Ave is a short bus ride away or a 10 minute stroll. There is a car park accessible from within the hotel. The hotel: Currently the hotel is undergoing renovation. The beauty of TripAdvisor is that one can be fore-warned with current reviews and so we emailed the hotel and asked for rooms away from the builders noise. The manager Tracey, very kindly obliged and we had really great rooms and they were really quiet too. This goes to show that if one takes the trouble to ask, the result is a lot better than being unhappy and complaining afterwards as some reviewers have done. All the staff at the Sandman were very helpful and pleasant and try hard to make one's stay a good experience. The rooms are comfortable, nice TV, coffee maker and all the usual amenities are provided. Food:There is a Moxies Restaurant on the premises, serving good food and with very pleasant staff. I think there is another restaurant but we weren't aware of it The lifts are a little erratic during the day as there are workmen all over the place, but after hours they are absolutely fine, just in need of a good redecoration when the workmen are gone. This little detail really didnt bother me at all. I would certainly return here again. We had two rooms and traveled as a family. If You use the parking garage get a notification from the hotel to display on your dashboard. Otherwise you'll end up with a parking ticket. Collapse
