Booked JR king suite thru an email sent to me by the sandman. Arrived early and could not get in room - no problem - left our bags would check in later and went to enjoy town. Came back at 9 pm - our room was downgraded to queen suite in the old part of the hotel - showed front desk confirmation email - said we booked third party - the link was to a Be Edmonton for the promo- and there was nothing we could do until the manager came in the morning. Spoke with manager next day - he moved us to a Jr king with jacuzzi in the new tower - very nice - however I still paid same rate for both nights!!! Our neighbors balcony looked straight onto our original room - gross! We should have been moved immediately at check in when the clerk saw my confirmation or at the very least paid a reduced rate for the queen room The hotel was not full and this could have easily been corrected Collapse

We headed to Edmonton for a visit to a dying relative awaiting Hospice placement. I made two reservations 1 via BeEdmonton and 1 called into their call centre. The issue I had was not being able to make multiple reservations with my discount coupon and so I needed to call the hotel, and when I got front desk reception that's when it went sideways. Nothing was great about this conversation with front desk so I called back to the call centre and they were great. Upon check in our room numbers were inaccurate and my discount coupon I was told would be credited to my next stay, not happy. We ended up getting into our room and on with the visits Scott Mackay Front desk manager took care of my check out without knowing what the long weekend was like for us and our experiences here with front desk either over the phone or upon check in. Scott did my invoice up and asked if I wanted to apply my discount to this charge or save for later or give them to someone else as a gift. This attitude and the suggestions were a welcome change from what I had pictured my check out to be like in my mind, super satisfied at his service. When I returned home I sent an email to the manager as I was a little choked about the telephone communications and BeEdmonton booking mishap, the manager kindly called me and expressed disappointment to hear our stay was not smooth and he will discuss a few issues with the staff. They have. A great training program but sometimes as I must do with my staff, must revisit ongoing training options. The hotel is undergoing renovations and we stayed in the tower this time and if I have my choice again I'd stay in the tower. It was so spacious with a full kitchen, walk in shower, king bed and another pull out bed in spacious living room. I usually stay at this Sandman as it's close to West Ed and when I'm here on business I head to West Ed park the car all day for free and take transit to downtown meetings. Collapse

My daughter , wife and I stayed here for family day weekend. The new tower is very nice, unfortunately the first room we were given had not been cleaned yet, I went down and talked to the front desk they were quick to put us higher up in the tower to same type of room, with a great view of the city. They explained how busy their morning was and that they were behind. I understand not everything works out as it should. Just remember people, going down and yelling at the people at the front desk doesn't make their day any easier, try and work with them. My family and i enjoyed our stay we plan on staying again next time we need to stay on west end of Edmonton. Thank you sandman hotel staff Collapse

I booked this hotel as part of the Be Edmonton promotion, so the booking after promotion was $65 after taxes and charges. The location of the hotel is the best thing going for it. This hotel appears to be an aged building. It's in the classic villa shape with a small pool and hottub in the center courtyard. The lobby was modern and re-finished and the courtyard was in the midst of renovations; however, no workmen were to be seen on a weekend so one can only speculate as to the time frame. The service was adequate, and the pool area was clean with fresh towels daily. The rooms too had clean linens and towels. Cleaners were in the halls in the mornings, though I didn't see any carts or housemaids. The mattresses in the standard double room were exceptionally soft, as were the pillows. I requested a playpen for my infant son, but one never arrived so I ended up bringing up a Costco wagon for him to sleep in. There were numerous rips, scuffs, and stains on the wallpaper, carpet, and upholstery. There was a LCD tv, but it was probably a few years old, judging by the thickness of the panel. The room faced 178 St NW and was pretty quiet for being on a major thoroughfare. A coach line pulled up late and idled noisily for a good long while, but that is not the fault of the hotel. The heatpump / AC unit came on at random times during the night despite hitting the "OFF" button; I'm guessing it's tied into a central control. Checkout was simple and efficient and they had a wonderful bowl of fresh Red Delicious apples for guests. DO NOT EAT AT THE ATTACHED DENNY'S!!! Collapse

The location of this hotel is probably the best thing about it. Very close to WEM and pretty much everything else important in the west end. My sister and I stayed for one night for our Uncles wedding in Edmonton. I do not understand how this hotel is rated three stars. The check-in experience was fine mostly. We waited in a line, which is understandable for us checking in at 4pm on a Saturday. However, their credit card process for checking in is simply archaic. The card was swiped, imprinted, and we had to pre-authorize a charge for $150 with the pin number! The lobby of the hotel was well kept and seemed very nice and gave me hope for the room. However when we got to our room on the 1st floor, we were pretty disappointed. Luckily we were heading back out to the second half of the wedding and we only needed the room for sleeping later in the night. The carpet had stains on it. The wallpaper was peeling. The bathroom was just slightly bigger than a closest. The room was very hot when we checked in (probably because it was a poolside room, which we did not ask for), so I adjusted the temperature before we left. When we got back from the wedding, the temperature was still extremely hot. I had to call the front desk and I was informed you had to turn on a light switch to turn on the heating/cooling unit. Overall, the stay was fine. We booked on a really good promotion and paid under $80. However, I would never stay here and pay the $170+ that I heard other guests had to pay when they checked in. It's simply a serviceable place to stay. There is nothing special about it. Don't pay full price or you will be quite disappointed. This hotel should be a 2 star. Collapse
