The staff at the Sanctuary are truly outstanding from the moment you arrive to the time you leave they are dedicated to providing each guest with a fabulous welcome and truly genuine warmth and friendliness. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Andrew and James the two concierges that provided my theatre tickets and lots of advice on sightseeing were superb as were the receptionists especially the lady who so kindly printed out my boarding passes for me which was a massive ask on my part. The two young doormen were also very professional helpful and polite to everyone and in such a natural and genuine way. We were celebrating our fortieth wedding anniversary and were lucky enough to be upgraded to a 'king' room a beautiful space with crystal chandelier and floor to ceiling twin windows looking out onto the busy street on the fifth floor which was very generous of the hotel and was much appreciated by us both. We were also left a note offering us a bottle of wine which was such a nice gesture. We found the room to be wonderfully comfortable with the bed and bedding second to none and was much needed after a busy days sightseeing. If we are lucky enough to visit New York city ever again the Sanctuary hotel would be our number one hotel of choice and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Collapse

The State of Florida was in an emergency state due to uncontrollable weather conditions (hurricane Irma) and as a nurse who was required to work for disaster protocol, the hotel was unable to cancel by reservation. I understand having a cancellation process, but to completely disregard an uncontrollable event such as a hurricane and to prioritize business over human life is unacceptable. We were looking forward to our vacation and if it wasn't for my line of profession and the weather conditions we would have loved to stay at this hotel. Unfortunately they weren't able to work with our terrible and tragic situation. Even our airliner, JetBlue, worked with us without hesitation and I wish this hotel would have done the same because we will be back in New York once things have settled down and now we won't be staying with them. This is our third time visited over the past few years. The Sanctuary is a smallish boutique hotel that has some of the most welcoming staff I have ever seen. We felt we were welcomed guests from check-in to check-out. We both commented that we felt like we were in a spa whenever we returned to the hotel form gallivanting around the city. Being a small hotel, there isn't a large lobby in which to congregate. While we miss it in other hotels, we really didn't here. We had the larger King room with skyline views. Given that the hotel is not that tall, skyline for us was looking up out our windows. Look across and you see the building across the street. The room was nice, and very comfortable. One thing to keep in mind is that the shower is a glass surround that is exposed to the room, although you can pull a curtain in front of it for privacy. The toilet is behind a sliding door, but it's not very isolated from the room. We were a little concerned about all of this for our first visit, but now we think these are neat features. There used to be parking available across the street (47th), but that is now closed. We ended up parking in a garage the next street over and brought our bags to the hotel. I'm not sure if there is parking to check-in or valet parking available. We were later told that there is another garage where you can get validated parking through the hotel, but we didn't know that ahead of time. We tried looking for the other garage when we left, but never found it. The only real negative during this trip was when we wanted to get a drink in the hotel lounge on the first floor. We sat down the the server came over, threw down a couple of menus, and immediately asked us if we knew what we wanted. of course we didn't since we hadn't even picked up the drink / wine menus before she asked. She reallty didn't seem like she wanted to be there. She walked away and left the entire bar for a while. Finally, one of the bartenders came over and took our order. When we had finished our drinks, we waited for maybe 15 - 20 minutes before someone came over to check on us. By then we were ready for the bill and to get out of there. This was a Saturday night. My suggestion is to avoid the downstairs lounge when you visit. Due to its proximity to Times Square, you will likely hear noises throughout the night. People, cars, sirens, etc. It's just the nature of the location. Even with some flaws, this is still one of our favorite places to stay, and we are looking forward to staying again on our next trip to NYC. Collapse

When I made my reservation I specifically asked for a quiet room as I'm a light sleeper. They put me in 707 "away" from the street noise. Little did I know that the rooftop bar on this hotel would be pounding music. When I called the front desk they acted completely confused how I could be hearing music way up on the 7th floor near "nothing". Then the (very nice) manager came to our room explaining their rooftop club's speakers were "bouncing off the adjacent buildings" and right back at my room. Like this was new information. He had them turn down the music although we could still hear it somewhat and turned our room fan on all night. It did bug me later that after going on Tripadvisor and doing better research, this noise issue is clearly known to the hotel so I found the front desk's reaction annoyingly disingenuous. And it looks like from other comments that this is an issue for rooms on many floors. Can't imagine how bad it would be on the two floors above me that are even closer to that rooftop bar. It's a fundamental problem with a hotel that doubles as a nightclub. Can't have it both ways. Given I was using the hotel solely for sleeping and it's proximity to Times Square, I have to believe there are other nearby hotels without rooftop bars pounding music. Collapse

My wife and I stayed here last year when we visited New York to get married and the hotel was incredible. The room was fairly spacious and had a selection of snacks (chargeable) in the room. The front desk were very helpful as well in helping us find an appropriate dry cleaners to get my suit and her dress sorted before our big day. Collapse
