5* hotel but not 5* service

My holiday was for 5 days at the Salgados Palace hotel, which is set in wonderful grounds. The 3 pools were fab and there was also another child friendly pool. Our holiday was all inclusive so we had the pleasure of eating in the buffet restaurant. There was such a variety of food, although the meat options were a but tough for my liking. The service in the restaurants was fantastic but we did have to wait at the bars when there was only one staff member there...during high season! I happened to forget my toothpaste but was not fussed as I thought I could use the toothpaste in the hotel room. Unfortunately there was no topthpaste and I was told that there was "no more left"...for a 5* hotel??! All hotels have mini toothpaste tubes in my experience- even 3 star ones! Anyway, they happened to find a couple of packs on my penultimate day! Not all the hotel reception staff could communicate in English, which I felt was poor. Also, when we checked in, there seemed to be a system error on their computers but we weren't told what was going on but instead were left watching one hotel reception staff member play around with a couple of kids who were standing by the desk. This was also poor for a 5* hotel. On arrival, we were offered a dinner voucher to another restaurant but when booking, we were told that the cuisine was Brazilian meats. This was not suitable for my friend, who was a vegetarian but when we were making possible suggestions, we were told "no, we can't do that". Eventually, after I asked to see the manager as no allowances were being made for my vegetarian friend, we were told that we could eat at another restaurant, which had a range of veg options. Despite being on an all inclusive deal, we had to pay €10 if we wanted to use the gym/spa facilities. The last annoying thing happened on our last day when we got ready to take the shuttle train to the nearest beach. Afyer waiting for 15mins, another hotel guest informed us that the driver was sick so no train would be operating to the beach. Now, lots of people were waiting, including lots of families but there was no information to tell people that the train would not be running. I informed the desk that many people were waiting and that they should have a sign/ information telling guests. The floor manager said that he would get a van organised to take people to the beach but while waiting, ANOTHER hotel guest informed us that we could take the walk way and walk 10 mins to the beach. Why does the hotel not provide this information??! There were no signs directing people to the beach on foot. The lack of information was terrible. A message could have been posted via the TV screens, then guests would know the situation and set off to the beach by other means! I was thankful for Daniela and Maria, who worked at the reception desk. Daniela, for changing our room from a disabled unit room to another room, as the previous guest wanted to stay an extra night in the original room meant for us. Maria, for contacting the holiday transfer company and tried to sort out the mistake they had made. Unfortunately, I felt that even though the hotel was a 5* hotel, the service was NOT 5* calibre. The location was absolutely beautiful but this hotel needs to improve if they are truly going to reflect the 5* label. Collapse
All inclusive concept needs serious attention

There are many great things about this hotel .... it could be a 5* but is not performing as such at present and I would more accurately rate it as an average 4*. The positives : Rooms are spacious and airy. Four pools are lovely although second pool for children needs further work and would benefit from a slide similar to the first children's pool. Staff are service oriented and want to help resolve any queries. The negatives: Entertainment is really poor .... I mean really poor. Sadly the only entertainment is also located next to reception - there's approx 70 seats available so when hotel is at full occupancy of c800 you can understand that fine serious issues arise. Kids club - team work incredibly hard - but set up is limited. Food & Drink - good standard of food in the main although rather bland. Lots of fish. Extremely busy and perhaps a bit bland. Moonlight restaurant for supplement is good. Drinks are exceptional although more staff are required to facilitate a better standard of service. Currently still at the hotel and out of 6 nights so far the kitchen has only managed to produce plain mashed potato on 1 occasion for our child with allergies - this is really unacceptable and disappointing as we have paid a full all inclusive fee for our child, but instead have had to shop at a supermarket to feed him. We notified reception and maitre'd staff and whilst all are keen to help ... none have actually done so. So sadly we won't be returning and I'd strongly advise that the concept as a whole is rethought. Collapse
Room perhaps 5 star, food maybe 3 at best

Stayed at Salgados Palace together with my wife and 6 y.o. son from 30/7 until 6/08 2017. Room was of a very good standard as could be said in general for the facilities throughout the hotel. Staff seemed pleasant and in general keen to assist where possible and required. However I believe this hotel is catering for too many guests, and cannot in any way maintain a standard in the food that would get anywhere close to the 5 stars affixed to the wall outside the front of the hotel. As the hotel is catering for the most part for All Inclusive guests, who of course visit the restaurant in large numbers, the kitchen is churning out food in (too) large batches, seemingly regardless of how busy the dining room is at that period of the meal service. This results in food, which whilst lacking the variety we would expect from a 5 star hotel, is also merely warm at best. So you have the options of heading for dinner at the busiest times, to have a chance of hot food, or go at the quieter times and hope to be surprised. My wife and myself worked on premium cruise ships for many years, and while we appreciate the challenges with catering to large numbers of all inclusive guests and maintaining a high standard, there did not seem to be much effort expended in pursuing this prerogative in the Salgados Palace kitchen, minimal variety of food on offer, large batches put out at all times, and rarely saw Chefs checking food at the service lines. We were offered vouchers (apparently as first time visitors) to the 19th Hole restaurant (lunches or Rodizio style meat grill evenings), or for one evening visit to the Starlight Restaurant. We attempted the Starlight restaurant on one evening but found the selection very limited, and not exactly what we may have expected from a speciality restaurant. The staff were attentive, but again, let down by the food. The next evening we opted to try the 19th Hole for our evening meal. Although the meat supply to the plates was continuous and plentiful, there seemed lack of attention to anything else to accompany the various meats on offer, or indeed any formal service outwith the meat. Alas by the 3rd day we had already given up on lunch in the hotel and opted instead for a taxi into old town Albufeira, where there was a much wider variety of food on offer at a generally higher quality, aside from needing to pay again for lunch it seemed to be the best option. Again, the facilities were of a very good standard, the room was of a very good standard, well designed, spacious (even for 3 of us), modern, and clean. Great views from the balcony. Cheerful and attentive service in the bars but at times struggled to keep up with demand at the pool bar. The public spaces were light and airy and of a modern design. The hotel were struggling in vain it seemed against the perpetual challenge faced by any sunshine blessed hotel, in the battle against guests reserving sun loungers with towels. Not exactly a fault of the hotel, hard to police, and at least they had tried by posting multiple signs against this practise. Although the hotel was approx. 7km from old town Albufeira, there was no free shuttle on offer to the old town unlike what was offered by similarly sized and rated hotels in the area. The benefit of being in a quieter area out of town, would be further enhanced by such a provision for the occasion a visit to the old town was desired. All in all, as said previously I believe the hotel is catering for too many guests, to maintain 5 star cuisine, without a radical change in how they serve food, and what food they serve. Whilst we appreciate budgets are forever tightening against profits, it would seem Salgados Palace are perhaps putting maintenance of profits ahead of their pursuit of culinary excellence. Collapse
A Lovely Four Star Holiday That Could So Easily Have Been Five Stars

This hotel was designed as a conference centre and built to a very high standard, so is spacious with fantastic quality rooms and grand spaces. So much better than your average cramped holiday resort hotel. The bedrooms have a massive, comfortable bed, loads of storage, superb showers, lovely balconies, tea, coffee, fridge, safe air conditioning.... and none of it charged as an extra. However, the downside of grand spaces such as the double height lobby/ reception which is also used as the main bar and for evening entertainment gets very loud and echoey due to lots of excited kids running around.... Hardly relaxing, so the Moonlight bar on the fifth floor is a much better choice! The guests comprise many nationalities, but are mainly Portuguese families, so Brits are in the minority and the hotel caters accordingly. That means large family tables in the restaurant, but great healthy food with loads of choice, lovely fish dishes, superb salads and really good local wine freely available. The food was excellent for such a large buffet service and constantly replenished with fresh, even near the end of service. The restaurant staff also worked very hard to ensure tables were quickly cleared, reset and linen replaced. There are complimentary "a la carte" restaurants available on a limted basis which you can book daily, but frankly, we preferred the buffet. The Nineteenth Hole offers BBQ meats served at your table, but it was a very confusing arrangement, whereas the Moonlight Bar offers a nice service, but a very limited menu. International drinks on the All Inclusive package was a real bonus and the cocktails looked excellent, but a few extra bar staff would make service smoother and faster. The four pools are also of excellent quality with very good sun beds which are readily available most of the day, so hardly any towels put out early morning.... yay!! Also, pool towels can be changed daily which was great. However, there was only one pool guy and he never seemed to quite get on top of the cleaning and ash tray emptying, so a bit more supervision and quality control would make a big difference. Although we didn't make much use of the activities available, we did enjoy trying Tai Chi and my wife enjoyed the Pilates and yoga tuition. The staff were helpful at all times and even though you had to check out by 11:00am, you had full use of the facilities on your final day and the excellent quality spa showers and lockers were available to use, so you were clean and fresh when you left the hotel. All in all, this is a great quality, generous, international hotel which would be truly 5 star with a little bit of management attention to service levels in a few areas along with a re-think about the reception bar area. Would I come back? Certainly!! Collapse

First and more serious problem. If you have small child who needs a trolley, don´t stay in the first floot (reception floor). To go into your room, you need to get two elevators... The hotel designer should be arrested for this one :) Second, the overcrowded buffet. In the rush hours, you'll not have a pleasant meal. Too much noise and too much people in the room. The room construction is very good, no noise heard from other rooms. Very good! Few staff in the pool bar. Sometimes the queue reached +-10 people. Pools are ok. Very good pools for kids. Collapse
