An old local glory, would I call this hotel in Dun Laoghaire. Just a 30 min ride with Dart (train) or bus, but everything is in 5 min walk of the hotel. I would not choose this hotel to stay, just for visiting Dublin, but for a concert night in the area like us, I would bother to look for anything else. Thus is a sure winner. Collapse

This was our second time staying at the Royal Marine. It really is an ideal location, over looking the sea and adjacent to the DART. The general facilities are great with good service and a decent bar and restaurant. The rooms are slightly on the tired side but I certainly wouldn't let that fact deter anyone from a stay! Collapse

Stayed two nights, November 8-10 as part of a tour group. We were greeted by a very friendly front desk person and were directed to our rooms. Our family had two rooms - one that was a family size room with three beds and the other room was a standard room with two beds. Family size room - impressive size, two queen size beds and one twin bed. The bathroom had some issues. The lighting was not ideal, the shower handle had pulled away from the wall and the towel rack had a rod that fell off. Some of the wood furniture was showing its age. I would consider these moderate issues and didn't detract from our stay. Standard room - Less than ideal. Upon entering the room, the smell of cigarette smoke hit us in the face. Surprising since it was clearly marked a non-smoking room. I went to front desk to let them know and to find out if we could get another room - which was not possible. The second day the bathroom smelled strongly of sewer gas but we could not determine where the smell was coming from. Front desk - When I went to talk with them about the standard room, the assistant had a hard time understanding what the issue was (probably due my NY accent ;). Another assistant came over (may have been the front desk manager) and told me there was nothing they could do as there were no other rooms available. I can understand if the hotel was sold out - it was busy, so it very well could have been but I had just witnessed a woman ahead of me moved to another room due to being dissatisfied with her original room. There were not apologies from either front desk person, just a matter of fact, "nothing we can do for you". I suspect that if I had not been part of a tour group they may have handled it a bit differently and I probably would have too. I was tired from traveling and wanted to make sure we weren't blamed for the smell or charged to have it cleaned. They made a note of the concern and that was that. Restaurant - It was very busy our first night there but were able to get a table and order dinner. The food was good, service was prompt and our server was attentive. I wish I had gotten her name because the second night she recognized us when we stopped in for drinks and took great care of us. I don't know that I would return to this hotel if I were in the area again though it does have a lovely view of the water. Collapse

Stayed 1 night on October the hotel has changed much since I regularly stayed there 10 years ago! Nice room on the top floor with views over the harbour. Reception was slow preferring to answer long phone calls when guests standing and the car park is a challenge if you are not driving a micro car! Great location for local harbour, take a walk along the sea front to the Forty foot bathing area. well worth it. Good choice of local restaurants. Collapse

What sells this hotel is its great location. It's a beautiful suburb of Dublin with its own charming streets for shopping and dining. Easy transportation to main Dublin via taxi or DART. When we arrived we were given a well appointed room in what I would call the bowels of the hotel with a window out onto utility equipment. We had no intention of being this close to a harbor and staring at heating equipment no matter how nice the room. We asked for a room change and were promptly given a room on the front side that overlooks the harbor. What a difference this made! We were part of a tour group so weren't sure our request would be honored. We also expected to pay more for this new room but there was no extra charge. Rooms are well appointed as I said but not luxurious in any way as you might expect from the architecture of the hotel. Dine in the tavern, not in the fancy restaurant at the front of the hotel. The food in the tavern is much better. They are usually full so get there early and bug the waitress as good service will be hard to get. Don't be the polite American or you won't get your dinner on time and as you like it. There are several nice restaurants a block from the hotel but we didn't try one. So there are options for you.
